Book Description

21 Mar 2013
“Vital new information for men diagnosed with prostate cancer!" —George Johnson, Director of the Informed Prostate Cancer Support Group in San Diego, the largest independent group in California “I have had treatment for prostate cancer and have been thru the mill. If I were going to go through the process again, I would start with Dr Cohen's book.” —P.C., independent review at Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs 2014 is the first and only book that focuses on the new tests and treatments revolutionizing prostate cancer care today. Yet most doctors and patients are still not aware of the many breakthroughs already being used at a few top cancer centers in the U.S. So tens of thousands of men diagnosed with prostate cancer get surgery or radiation they don’t need with their serious, often permanent side effects. In a step-by-step manner, Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs 2014 describes the new methods of diagnosis & treatment and where to obtain them. In this highly-praised book, you'll discover: • Why 85% of men who get surgery or radiation for prostate cancer do not need it. • Why a high PSA test does not necessarily mean cancer. • How to tell if you really need a biopsy (many men don’t need one). • Why a targeted biopsy is superior and safer, and where to get one. • Why the new prostate DCE-MRI is key to deciding on treatment. • Genetic tests available today for accurate diagnosis and more effective treatment. • Alpharadin, the new, targeted treatment for bone metastases. Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs addresses: • Why men should continue to get an annual PSA test. • Why doctors recommend prostate surgery or radiation for men who don’t need it. • The tests you really need for a full picture of your prostate cancer. • New treatment options your doctor may not tell you about. This book will also help you determine: • If you truly need surgery or radiation therapy (some men do, many men don’t) • If you are a candidate for active surveillance. • If medication treatment instead of surgery/radiation is a valid choice for you. A lot of confusing nonsense is talked about this disease and its treatment; even by practising urologists
Jay Cohen's book gives clear concise and up to date information which is essential reading for those men approaching middle-age and beyond.
Their spouses should also read this book so they may give informed help with the difficult decisions that have to be made in choosing options in treatment or even if treatment is required at all

Really great summary of what is new in this field.

Written by a doctor - but not from the position of selling a particular approach. Its written from the perspective of someone on the receiving end.

As anyone knows who's had a diagnosis - the available options are incredibly complicated. I've been researching this area since September and was starting to get a bit punch drunk over the options and for each option there seems so many sometimes conflicting opinions and little clear numerical data to inform decisions.

Having a huge pile of materials collected - I was starting to get concerned over having to read them again. This book has helped me re-engage which is very important as I'll have to make decisions quite soon.

The problem with the current tests and treatments of prostate cancer is that they are a mess of old patterns of thinking and new tests and procedures that are not yet consolidated into every doctors treatment systems. I found this text improved my awareness of the many things that can do good or go badly wrong with the system as it is now.
The ideas in this document should be known by anyone starting to have investigations for suspected prostate problems. Get as much data as you can from many documents like this BEFORE you allow what may be unecessary and damaging treatments begin. I learned an intersting idea lately. It is that where there are many treatments for a disease, none of them work. Learn before you burn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR EVERY ADULT MAN 17 April 2013

This is an unbelievably beautiful, timely, and candid book. The author is an MD with outstanding credentials. If you read his 2001 book OVER DOSE: THE CASE AGAINST THE DRUG COMPANIES, you'll see he doesn't pull his punches.

In the present book, Dr. Cohen tells how he was pressured to undergo unnecessary, potentially harmful, and irreversible treatment following a recent diagnosis of prostate cancer. It's interesting to read that he received the same mumbo-jumbo babble the rest of us ordinary mortals get from arrogant MDs who were, and still are, as out of date the day they were graduated from medical school. Cohen sees through the cut, burn, and poison mentality and, lo and behold, discovers some shockingly-positive good news. In Cohen's case, his discoveries enabled him to avoid the surgery and/or radiation being pushed by his fellow MDs. Cohen even admits some of the best advice he found was from "my little unofficial support group" rather than from his attending prostate cancer specialists.

A shining gem in this book is Cohen's argument on page 55, using a study conducted at the Cleveland Clinic and published in 2012, that of 179 men who underwent radical prostatectomy (removal of the prostate and more) between 2004 and 2008, about 71% had not needed the surgery. Furthermore, many of these poor guys are now both impotent and incontinent; some developed other serious, long-term side effects from the surgery; and the cancer returns in about 30% of them.

Dr. Cohen was forced to search for the truth, and he did. He sorted out the details, and now he is sharing what he found. Even more importantly, he is sharing as an accomplished researcher and author of world-wide renown. Read this nice, concise book and you will find out all there is to know about new tests, new treatments, and better, rosy options in the treatment of prostate cancer. Afterwards, chances are you will know more than most urologists and radiologists.

What more can you ask for the price of a couple of beers at the ballpark?

5.0 out of 5 stars Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs by Dr Jay S Cohen 27 May 2013

I have had treatment for prostate cancer and have been thru the mill. My wife and I were frightened out of our mind when we got the biopsy results. Doctors were urging me to do something immediately.

We read a Prostate Cancer bible from Johns Hopkins as well as a dozen other books. Once you have had prostate cancer, you are always on active surveillance. I am always reading new books on the subject, because prostate cancer can reoccur.

If I were going to go through the process again, I would start with Dr Cohen's book.

After reading Dr. Cohen's incredible book, the anxiety I have felt concerning my prostate for over 15 years has finally subsided. Fifteen years ago I was told that I had BPH - who doesn't -LOL!. Several PSA tests and a few years later, I was told to have a prostate biopsy which I declined in favor of a "second opinion" from a renowned "expert urologist". He told me that aside from BPH, my prostate seemed perfe ctly normal. He then referred me to one of his "protégées". My PSA levels continued to fluctuate, and I experienced a severe case of prostititus. I continued my follow up visits with the docs on that team, none of whom would appropriately "listen" or "explain" their "recommendations" which included heavy doses of antibiotics and a biopsy, all of which I declined. I subsequently decided to find another urologist, and found an excellent one. Although my symptoms persisted, I have been pursuing a course of "active surveillance"(as Dr. Cohen describes as a viable option in this book).
Before reading Dr. Cohen's book, I had been searching for answers and information regarding my condition. I now feel that I had made the appropriate decisions about myself. This book has detailed, described, and discussed every question and concern I have had, but could neither articulate or find answers for. What a relief! Finally, I feel that I am now in control of my options. I will continue to pursue a prudent course of active surveillance, and before I undergo any invasive tests, I will DEMAND the options recommended by Dr. Cohen.
My advice to anyone who has any issues or questions about their prostate is to READ THIS BOOK! Don't make any decisions or undergo any procedures until you have discussed the options and recommendations presented by Cohen
with your urologist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Future Diagnostic Tools 13 Dec 2013

This book was for my husband and he liked it a lot. (He doesn't have prostate cancer, but his PSA was high, and he was worried that he might have it.) This book was very informative and talked about near-future diagnostic tools that doctors will have to more accurately diagnose this disease without invasive surgery. We found a great doctor at a nearby teaching hospital who will have the new equipment ready next month.
