Product Description

Created by Euston Films, the legendary Thames subsidiary whose hit series include The Sweeney and Minder, this razor-sharp mid-eighties drama stars Gary Olsen and Brian Bovell as East London likely lads who are always a few quid short of success and trying to make good in Thatcher's Britain.

Resourceful, lovable and ever optimistic, Pincy and Billy harbour an entrepreneurial ambition that Mrs Thatcher would surely endorse. But as the Docklands development begins to take shape, among the derelict wharves and impoverished streets of the Isle of Dogs the two friends can only lurch from one dodgy scheme to another; often on the wrong side of the law and in hock to everyone from the rent man to the local café owner, they're still searching for The Big One - something with prospects...

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Mono ), SPECIAL FEATURES: 3-DVD Set, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: All 12 episodes of the 1980s comedy drama following a pair of East End chancers trying to make it big in Thatcher's Britain. Pincey (Gary Olsen) and Billy (Brian Bovell) believe that they fit in well with the hard-headed, look after number one ethos propagated by Margaret Thatcher. However, whether the Conservative Party leader would approve of the variety of dodgy schemes they pursue in the Isle of Dogs in a desperate attempt to make it big is a matter of conjecture. The episodes are: 'The P to S Day', 'Partners in Brine', 'Uncle Harry's System', 'Dirty Weekend', 'Rodent Avengers', 'Standing On Your Own One Foot', 'Subterranean Pick Sick Blues', 'Frying Tonight', 'Four Men in a Boat', 'Follow the Yellow Brick Lane', 'Running All the Way: Part 1' and 'Running All the Way: Part 2'. ...Prospects - Complete Series - 3-DVD Set

Fair play to Network for finally releasing Prospects a Euston Films classic which has slipped off the radar for over 20 years and depicts a London docklands/society which is now all but a memory. Brian Bovell and Gary Olsen are Billy and Pincy loveable duckers and divers from the Isle of Dogs who scratch, scam and steal a living whichever way they can in the middle of Margaret Thatcher's era of enterprise, money and the yuppie. The 12 episodes take in many of Pincy's ideas and scheme's which although scorned upon by Billy he goes along with and usually results in some sort of trouble and scrapes with local villain's like 'Stretch' (Eddie Tagoe), corrupt businessmen, racism and police detective Halforth (Ben Howard) which with comedic realism depict a sense of realism for many working class east Londoners in the mid 1980's.

It's a real shame Euston Films/Channel 4/ITV and the writer Alan Janes never got it together for at least a second series of Prospects which was rumoured to have been put forward as a replacement for Minder as in my opinion based on the quality of the episodes here and the popularity Prospects had when repeated on ITV in 1987 it would certainly have been a more interesting (arguably better) option than a Dennis Waterman-less Minder. Prospects also along with shows like One Summer, Scully, Boys From The Blackstuff, Auf Pet etc. also shows an alternative socially real 1980's to the wealth, greed and money making era many seem to picture it as and does resonate very strongly with anyone who was a teenager/youth from that background in that era.

Another day comes to an end, quality tv show, should have been the new Minder but never quite got the recognition it deserved. Maybe a bit dated now but still worth the watch and the theme tune pure class. . . Buy it. . .
