Product Description

Includes Ashley Hutchings, Shirley Collins, John Tams, Eddie Upton, Simon Nicol, Graeme Taylor, Phil Pickett, John Rodd, John Sothcott, Dave Mattacks and Michael Gregory. Sleevenotes by John Tobler and David Suff, incorporating notes by Shirley Collins, Ashley Hutchings, Phil Pickett and John Tams. This release includes two bonus tracks: 'Merry Sherwood Rangers' – the studio version as opposed to live 'dance' version – and 'On Christmas Night All Christians Sing' . One of the most revolutionary aspects of 'The Prospect Before Us' was the band's determination to record some tracks live with an audience of dancers in the studio; The Albion Dance Band were accompanied on most of their gigs by the Albion Morris Men, and intended the record to capture some of the excitement of a live concert.

Many of the Albion's albums have the habit of kicking off with the top tracks and this one is no exception. The Uncle Bernards/Jenny Lind take merges straight in with the (now somewhat politically incorrect) 'Hunt is Up'. Always a great way of cheering myself up is to play these two tracks at high volume.
This is very much a traditional based album but covering a lot of ground from early music to the 20th century. The music varies from an almost straight classical Purcell minuet to typical up-tempo Albion folk rock.
Many of this line-up went onto make the classic Rise Up Like the Sun but if you like more trad music this would be my choice.
Ten out of ten!

I'm beginning to think that a good Albion Band collection would consist of all the earlier, post-Fairport albums and one or two tracks from most of the later ones. Certainly this one is a must; great tracks in all the usual different styles. So buy this, and anything between it and, say, "Under The Rose" as whole albums (but buy the later songs as individual tracks when you've decided you like them).

Even better on CD than on vinyl; this is one of the brightest and most memorable albums of folk/rock. An album that will always work its way to the top of the pile in the car.
