Book Description

25 April 2013

Prophet of Bones is a thrilling novel by Ted Kosmatka.

An ancient discovery. A hidden past. A deadly conspiracy to bury the truth.

He was told his was the only name on their list. But for brilliant young anthropologist Paul Carlsson, asked to examine the cache of bones found on as remote Indonesian jungle island, fascination soon turns to fear.

Because waiting for him east of Java is evidence of something that shouldn't exist; a revelation that if made public will turn scientific and religious orthodoxy on its head. If Carlsson discovers the truth too many powerful interests have far too much to lose.

But not every prophet is without honour. And Carlsson, alone and on the run, is determined to reveal the discovery to a world in which the church and science have conspired to hide it. A world which, it's been proven, is only 5,800 years old...

Prophet of Bones is Ted Kosmata's enthralling second novel. The Games showcased Kosmata's imaginative genius and Prophet of Bones is no different. Fans of Robert Harris, Michael Crichton and Sam Bourne will be hooked.

Praise for Ted Kosmata:

'A masterwork of intrigue and menace. I was enthralled.' Clive Cussler

'A hell of a storyteller ... one of those increasingly rare novels that immediately takes you on a journey into the world of the author's wondrous imagination ... truly hard to put down. This is what a novel is about.' Nelson DeMille

Ted Kosmatka studied biology at Indiana University. He has worked as a zookeeper, steel mill worker, lab technician, and videogame writer for the extremely successful studio, Valve, publisher of mega-hits such as the Half-Life series and Portal. His work has been nominated for both the Nebula and Hugo awards and won the 2010 Asimov's Reader's Choice Award. He lives in the American Pacific North-west.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking, intelligent thriller 26 April 2013
By Kate TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Thrillers about genetic engineering and DNA meddling are popular at the moment - I've read a couple very recently myself (Island 731 by Jeremy Robinson and Rock Creek Park by Simon Conway). Prophet of Bones, though, has a very different twist. It places us in a reality in which science has proven that the Earth and everything on it was created no longer than 5,800 years ago - by God. While this takes a little effort to absorb in a thriller that is about science, it's worth it. In Prophet of Bones, scientists believe that fossils are formed over thousands of years, not millions, and that evolution is not the survival of the fittest but of the most favoured. Man is perfect. How, then, to explain the ancient remains of a new species of human discovered in the jungle of a remote Indonesian jungle? Anthropologist Paul Carlsson is sent out to investigate something that shouldn't exist. The miracle is that he survives the trip.

Prophet of Bones isn't a conventional thriller anymore than Paul Carlsson is a conventional hero. His reluctance to become involved is strong but when his expedition to Indonesia results in the murder of friends and the loss of an eye, he is transformed. Paul is a loner, though, or at least he is at the beginning. He sets out slowly, surely and quietly to unravel the scientific truth of the DNA that he smuggled from the island, learning that there could be other remains and, not only that, that there are more scientists trying to stay hidden. If found, their deaths are horrific, pieces torn from them. Whether these injuries are caused by human hands is another matter for Paul to uncover.

The strength of Prophet of Bones lies in the character of Paul Carlsson.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Pace and a lot of fun 20 April 2013
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Thrillers are books that grab you and refuse to let go, taking the reader on an adventure that is fast paced adventure that keeps you gripped to the last page, and this latest title by Ted Kosmatka does all that and more. Delving into a similar style to Michael Crichton, this story is one that I not only had a lot of fun with but one that kept me going from start to finish, bringing in scientific elements to help the story keep credibility.

It's fun, it has just the right amount of action and with a principle set of characters that not only keep the arc moving but lead to each successive step all round will give the reader a book that will entertain them for a few successive nights. Great stuff.

What if modern science had discovered that the world was no more than 6,000 years old based on radiocarbon dating? What if ancient hominoid bones were discovered in a remote Indonesian island that contradicts this dating, strongly implying a much older age for humanity, other life on Earth and the Earth itself? These are the premises behind Ted Kosmatka's second novel "Prophet of Bones" and though he deserves ample praise for his very good prose and for crafting a good alternate history science fiction thriller, they're not sufficient to warrant more than a lukewarm positive review from this reviewer, who was trained in invertebrate paleobiology, related aspects of evolutionary biology, and geology. Much of the science which Kosmatka describes in the book, relying upon excellent science writing from the likes of geneticist and anthropologist John Hawks and eminent science journalist Carl Zimmer among others, requires sophisticated scientific knowledge and technology more consistent with a much older age for the Earth than what he is claiming for his present-day alternate history. To his credit, he doesn't delve deeper into the Young Earth Creationist theme behind his novel, making casual references to it and the so-called "Design Theory" practiced by notorious Intelligent Design creationists Michael Behe, William Dembski, Stephen Meyer and Jonathan Wells of the Seattle, WA-based Discovery Institute. More successful is his sympathetic portrayal of his protagonist Paul Carlsson as Carlsson becomes caught up in a vast decades-old biological engineering conspiracy replete with secrecy, deceit and murder....
