Product Description

Without the Keys, something terrible will happen. Something that cannot be undone. And with them, I might bring an end to the riddle of the Prophecy and my strange part in it. If Alice and I are on conflicting sides of the Prophecy, the Keys would be dangerous in her hands. Which means I have to find them. And I have to do it before my sister. This is the story of sixteen-year-old Lia Milthorpe's quest to discover her role and her twin sister's in a powerful prophecy that has affected twin sisters for generations. But nothing can prepare her for what she discovers - about herself, about her family, and about the danger that goes from haunting her dreams to becoming her reality.

Great Gothic YA read 13 April 2011
Format:Paperback
The story is set in a Victorian period English country home against a dark Gothic backdrop of mystery and legend. Much like Gothic genre books and poetry of the day this is a dark story that is full of secrets, betrayal and paranormal goings on.

Lia and Alice our twin sisters with a younger brother Henry and having lost their mother at a young age when begin this book at the graveside of their father that has recently died under strange circumstance. Already the mystery starts and draws you in and as each piece of the puzzle appears we learn that his death was not as simple as it may seem and that Lia and Alice are more than just sisters; they are the next chain in a family prophecy that ties them to a history that is bigger than either of them.

From the point of view of Lia we find out what the prophecy is and her part in it all as well as how the rest of the people in her life are connected or affected by what she discovers.

Though really loving this book and the continual twists as they unfolded and the drama that unfurled from each reveal I was left feeling slightly disappointed that the ending didn't have more of a bang. I was almost expecting more than actually happened. It was by no means a bad ending because it left me wanting more and eager to buy the next book but it felt like this book was building up to a big battle or event but really it is a gradual build to the next book when I was expecting more....now.

This shouldn't deter you from reading it because it really is a well written story that feels realistic in its setting and the Gothic genre. Having read Gothic works at University I can honestly say that this book feels like a modern telling of a Gothic story. You have a great sense of the era and location through the details but you can easily engage with the characters even though they are of a different time. It's a great telling sign of a writer that understands both her audience and her characters and finds a way for them to connect.

The divide between good and evil is often hazy because of the dual nature of the prophecy and the twin sisters strained relationship as the true meaning of the prophecy becomes clear and this is a key factor in Lia's world. She has a choice but she is up against a fate bigger than herself and her will is pulled from every angle between her love of her family, friends, Sonia and Luisa, and her heart, James, and her unchanging place in a foretelling part in events that could change or even end the world. I would definitely buy the next book Guardian at the Gate to see where this whole mystery is leading and I feel that something big is on the horizon for both the sisters and not all of it is good.

I don't usually like books that are very slow to start like this one it but I found this book incredibly engaging and enjoyed it quite a bit.

The main thing I loved about this book was the historical setting the story was based in. I loved reading about how things were done and about a world which is both so similiar and so different to ours in its values and customs.

I felt this book was setting up what could be an excellent series. A lot of seeds were sown of future plot lines which did mean that not a lot was resolved. I am hoping that they are played out and resolved well in future books

I liked the main characer of Lia although she is quite reserved and a little hard to warm to. I enjoyed her relationship with the other girls in the book and enjoyed following their investigations into the prophecy and the world surrounding it. I found Alice to be an incredibly creepy character and often found myself dreading what she was going to do - I hope she gets what's coming to her.

A highly original concept that appears to be well thought out. I hope the next books in the series deliver - if they do and do it well this will be an epic series.

It is hard to write a proper review for PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS, because a lot of the detail is best left unsaid, so as not to spoil the plot twists and turns. A dark, twisted, Gothic tale, PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS is the first in a scheduled trilogy by Ms. Zink.

Lia and Alice are twins. With the passing of their father, the two have recently become orphans. However, their Aunt Virginia has taken over their guardianship. The two girls were as close as could be, but in the last few years, the distance between them has grown.

Lia doesn't trust Alice any more, and finds her sneaky and guarded when the two are left alone. Not long after their father's death, a bizarre mark appeared on Lia's wrist. Most girls wouldn't know the mark, but from her father's mythology books, she knows that it is the Jorgumand.

As the girls get past their grief, Lia discovers secrets about her mark, and two other girls in the community. They have a common background and band together to find the truth behind the secrets. When they discover that there is a prophecy surrounding Lia and Alice, they know what they must do to safeguard the gate spoken of in the prophecy.

That's it. I can't reveal more of the story or it will spoil the discovery of the secrets that Lia and her friends, Sonia and Luisa, uncover. As secrets are laid bare, more questions arise. Aunt Virginia reveals parts of the past, but only Lia and her friends can prevent the future.

PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS is written in a classic style. Readers may struggle at first with this style of writing, but stick with it! The intrigue and the twists that Ms. Zink creates are unique and satisfying in the end. However, don't expect to have everything tied up neatly by the final page. PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS is only the beginning and there is much more to be revealed in the next chapters. Part two of the trilogy, GUARDIAN OF THE GATE, is due out in August 2010.
