5.0 out of 5 stars DOUBLE THUMBS UP!, 29 Aug 2011
Yet another review of mine that I am totally biased about! This author can do no wrong in my book. I have all his books, read them all in order and apart from the immense amount of history I have learned along the way, one gets very affectionate about the main players, almost like family! When I was nearing the end of book 28 I sent him an email asking him to get a move on and write more! He replied within a couple of hours to outline his schedule!! I have now read the last book and patiently waiting for the next one. The research he completes is second to none. I have learned soooo much, wish school lessons had been this interesting. And of course it leads me to research historical facts and other authors. So obviously I highly recommend this book, again, they are stand-alone novels but if you can start at book one and work your way through them you are in for a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Prophecy of Death, 9 Nov 2009

Michael Jecks has done it again. A wonderful book. This time Sir Baldwin and Bailiff Puttock are out and about in Europe, away from their beloved Devon, finding themselves embroiled in the machinations of the church and state.

I've got his next book all lined up to read, and will be happy that they are at least on their home turf!

4.0 out of 5 stars My Kingdom for a Vial of St. Thomas Holy Oil!, 21 July 2009
By Michael OConnor "Wordsmith" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Prophecy of Death (Paperback)
Gadzooks, methinks Furnshill and Puttock were born under REALLY bad signs. The boys are barely back from France when dead bodies crop up and an important vial of precious oil is stolen. Before you can say "Tower of London," our favorite medieval detectives are reluctantly on the case. It all adds up to another entertaining tale from Michael Jecks.

The action once again centers around the royal court of Edward II, the missing oil being quite important to his continued reign. That viper Hugh le Despenser is up to his old tricks and THE PROPHECY OF DEATH careens back and forth between murder investigations and palace intrigue not to mention ongoing troubles with the French king.

Jecks has few equals when it comes to breathing life into historic figures. The king figures prominently in this 2008 entry and we come to understand the man. It's hard deciding whether to pity or loathe the guy especially 'cause he's filled with such self-pity and self-loathing! Despenser is always a delight although he doesn't dominate the story like he did in the wonderfully wicked DISPENSATION OF DEATH.

Unlike DOD, I gave TPOD four stars. Perhaps it's unfair to compare THE PROPHECY OF DEATH to that earlier work - which I consider one of the BEST Knights Templar mysteries ever - but TPOD wasn't as spellbinding. The sections on Edward's son, though, were delicious.

All in all, another nicely-constructed, well-peopled medieval murder mystery sure to please Knights Templar fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good detective mystery, 2 Aug 2011

Jecks is a good author who really gives his reader a feel for the times, and each character is fleshed out so that they are not just empty shells, but real people. He is not only a good mystery writer, but also a person who is knowledgeable about the period. I have read several of his books, and this series is a genuine delight. One wishes that history were taught that way.

2.0 out of 5 stars medieval mystery, 18 Nov 2009
By R. Larson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Prophecy of Death (Paperback)
I've read several of the books in the KnightsTemplar series, but this one is not the usual quality. There's very little character development and much on 14th-century English and clerical politics. It was a book which I was glad to finally finish (since I selective about what I buy, there are very few books I don't finish).
