About the Author
Douglas Scarrett is now retired from his last post as Director of Estate Management at De Montfort University where he was previously Deputy Head of the School of Land and Building Studies. He entered the educational field after extensive professional experience in commercial and government organisations and as an equity partner in an old established firm. He was joint founding editor of the Journal of Property Management and has been an external tutor for the College of Estate Management for the past 25 years.

I am a chartered surveyor by profession and have previously lectured valaution so I do understand the principles of valuation. Notwithstanding I like to, and am infact obligued by the RICS to keep up to date with amongst other matters valuation and in that guise I ordered this book.
Now, not being a student I can fully appreciate this volume ie I don't need to wade through it to do assignments. It was a easy to follow text and the examples are well explained. I would go further to say that in regrad to development valuations this book is better then the RICS guidence notes.
Ok I am only preaching to a very small sector of the Amazon customer base but if you are studying or you are a veteren chartered surveyor, like me, then this volume is well worth having.

As a general practice development surveyor of 20 years, I found this book a little tired - reminiscent in fact of what I studied back at Reading. I was looking for something that set out how valuation should be done now - given the power of spreadsheets and better data availability.
Instead, this book is a tired and dusty approach.
On the plus side, it is competent and readable, and I would recommend it as useful for students.
