5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it 10 Jun 2014

It's been a number of years since we've had a new Chrissie Manby book so when I saw that A Proper Family Holiday was available to download on NetGalley I immediately requested a review copy from her publisher to read.

Jacqui Benson wants all her family with her to celebrate her 60th birthday so she decides to treat her whole family to a holiday together... so what could possibly go wrong when she along with husband Dave, Grandad Bill, daughters Chelsea and Ronnie, Ronnie's partner Mark and children Sophie and Jack all spend a week together in Lanzarote!

But it turns out that there's more behind Jacqui's desire to have the family together for her birthday as a deep hidden family secret is revealed...

A Proper Family Holiday was a hilarious tale of the dramas that ensue when four generations of a family go on holiday together especially when the two daughters have not spoken to each other for two years since falling out at a previous family get together.

At first I didn't really warm to Chelsea who seemed ashamed of her family but my perception of her changed as the story progressed, especially when her barriers came down and you got to see the more vulnerable side to her especially concerning her nephew Jack.

I loved the mix of characters throughout this novel, from grandad Bill who had some classic one liners right down to young Jack who stole the show for me. I'm sure we can all relate at least one of the characters to someone in our own family... I know I can but I'm not going to name and shame.

As the title suggests this book would make the perfect holiday read but it's not all sweetness and light as there are certainly a few darker topics covered too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 5 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm a fan already of this author, and I snarfed this book up in a day. Two sisters who have been estranged for 2 years agree to go on a family holiday to celebrate their mother's 60th birthday. One is pleased, the other is appalled. They have developed their lives along very different paths, and yet have they? No spoiler alert but it was interesting to see how the family members developed and how secrets, misunderstandings and assumptions are woven into an ordinary family holiday. I loved it.

I have just finished reading A Proper Family Holiday by Chris Manby and couldn't wait to do my review to get all my thoughts about this book down as I feel like I am going to burst!

The Benson family are off on holiday to Lanzarote to celebrate mum Jacqui's 60th birthday. Wanting all of her family to be together for this milestone she has treated her daughters Chelsie and Ronnie to the holiday along with Ronnie's husband Mark and their children Jack and Sophie and not forgetting grandad Bill too!

This holiday will be the first time the sisters have seen each other in two years after a rift, will they be able to put the past behind them and be able to help each other when they find out the real reason behind this Proper Family Holiday?

What a superb holiday read. I really don't know where to start with this review as it is one of those books where you are really disappointed when you finish because you don't want to leave the characters behind. I am really hoping that the author is tucked away at home busy writing a follow up to this book because there is still so much that can be done with each and everyone of the character in this book my mind is in overdrive!

I loved the bond between Chelsea and her nephew Jack, he seems to be able to break down her barriers and touch the more vulnerable side to her it was like watching the ice queen melt! When their characters were together you knew that there were going to be troublesome and comical events ahead! I did feel a little evil though when it came to Lily who is a spoilt little madam, each time little Jack wanted to seek revenge I was 100% behind him I would have loved to have "accidentally" tripped her up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous beach read! 14 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
OMG! Where do I even start with this? I have loved Chrissie Manby’s book ever since I read Deep Heat ages ago. Her last book ‘What I did on my holidays’ was amazing, and was published in 2012, so I had a looooong wait till this one was published and it was so worth the wait! This book is such a great read, you instantly get absorbed into the story, and with Chrissie’s descriptive writing you can perfectly imagine Hotel Volcan and Playa Bravas.

The Benson Family are your typical working class family and they are wonderful. All individual and easy to relate to. I think Chelsea was my favourite Benson, she seemed really misunderstood. Everyone seemed to think that she thought she was better than everyone else, but inside she had struggles of her own. I really loved her story with Jack and how they became close, 2 unlikely allies! Jack himself was hilarious, absolutely adored him!

I felt really sorry for Ronnie, she has a lot on her plate with money troubles and other family issues, and you can really see it all get on top of her. I was wishing she gave her sister some slack though, She resented Chelsea, though it was understandable why she reacted like that, it must have been hard seeing our sister live (in Ronnie’s view) a more successful life free of worry and responsibility.

The whole book was absolutely brilliant, the main storyline was really happy, but had some touching moments too, the scene between Jack and Chelsea on their last night sharing a room bought a tear to my eye! On the other hand one of the side stories, Bill and Gloria was hilarious, their final scene meeting the whole family was so funny, one of the most memorable moments in the book, and definitely the funniest.

I’ve seen a few book bloggers comment that this was Chrissie’s best yet.
