Product Description

Product Description

Record – super intuitive, streamlined recording software. Reason – the legendary virtual studio rack packed with synths, samplers, effects and all the electronic music production tools you need. Combine the two and they fuse into one incredibly powerful application, while still remaining the fast, lean, rock solid music production environment that lets you stay focused on your music making. The Record Reason Duo pairs the world-renowned, award-winning music production environment Reason with Record, the recording software for musicians. Reason and Record are built around virtual racks of instruments and effects. As you work on your track, you are building the rack as you go. Everything is automatically patched in and routed as you create more instruments, but should you want to get deep, simply flip the rack around and route audio anyway you like, just like in a real world studio, only faster and better. The powerful sequencer is where you will find yourself doing most of the work. While keeping its famous ease of use, it still comes with all the editing features you need. New in this release, Blocks mode lets you build your songs using a pattern-based approach and then quickly build song arrangements out of the blocks. Making music is all about following your inspiration and the last thing you want is to be interrupted. Reason and Record's legendary creative flow lets you stay focused on the music and explore your options as you go along. With a completely integrated environment like Reason and Record, you will face fewer dialog boxes, more inspiration and more music. Kong Drum Designer Analogue synthesis, physical modeling, sampling, REX loops, support sound generators, effects, flexible routing, multiple hit types and more. The Kong Drum Designer is not your regular drum module. It's the drum module focused on letting you get exactly that drum sound you're after. Kong has 16 pads and 16 drums. Build your drum sounds based on any of the nine different drum modules. Flavor the sound with 11 support generators and effects. Program automation, create alternating groups and let Reason's powerful sequencer control the beat. Reason 5 ships with a sound bank with a generous supply of kits for Kong across a wide variety of styles. Live Sampling Remember the time when samples were something you sampled and not loaded from your hard drive? When a sampler was a machine that could record samples, not just play them back. As samplers became software instead of machines, they came to rely on external sample editing software for recording and editing the samples and the art of spur-of-the-moment creative sampling was pretty much lost. Now we are bringing it back to Reason 5 with its live sampling input. All sample players in Reason are now samplers. Just hook up a sound source to the rack's sampling input and you are ready to start sampling. Use a mic, a turntable, an instrument or the entire Reason mix. Blocks Sequencing Mode Many musicians tend to think of music in terms like intro, verse, chorus, breakdown, buildup and so on. With the new Blocks mode in Reason 5 and Record 1.5, your sequencer does too. Blocks lets you sequence your songs using a more pattern-based approach, with the segments of your song as individual building blocks to be laid out in your arrangement. Start by creating the discrete parts of your song in blocks mode. When you are ready to start building your song, just switch back to song mode and draw in what blocks should play in the dedicated pattern lane. Use one block for the verse and one for the chorus — or build your song around a single 8-bar loop. Blocks provide a very fast way of creating a musical structure for your song. But the options don't end there. With the basic arrangement laid out, you can see the contents of the blocks and create variations and mute individual parts, or add further musical elements in song mode. A typical use for Blocks is to create your backing track in blocks and then use the song mode sequencer to record vocals or instrumental performances. For music based around a single looped section, one repeated block with automation and mutes of individual tracks added in song mode makes arranging a breeze. You never have to commit to using either mode - you are free to move back and forth between Blocks and Song mode, and any changes you make in your Blocks will instantly be manifested in all instances of that Block. Need some tambourine on that chorus? Add it, and there will be tambourine whenever the chorus block is playing. Dr OctoRex The upgraded Dr. Octo Rex loop player loads eight REX loops into one player and lets you switch between them on the fly. This makes arranging a breeze - load the drum loops into one player, the guitars into another and use the sequencer to select what loop to play in a pattern-like fashion. With eight loops to switch between, the new loop player also comes ready for the experimental minded. Set the player to retrig the loops on the beat, on the bar or on the 16th note. Or program the loops manually like in the original rex player. For each of the eight loops, the new rex player also comes with an expanded set of per-slice settings. Set pan, pitch, filter frequency and level, reverse slices, use multiple outputs, create alternating groups of slices and much more. Apart from the big feature additions, there are of course tons of smaller additions and changes to Reason 5 and Record 1.5. Here are a few of them. Automatic Self-Contain of Samples (incl from ReFills) Make your songs self-contained by embedding samples and even ReFill sounds in your file. Reason 5's self-contained song format makes collaborating with your friends a breeze. Even breezier than before actually. Record Notes on Multiple Tracks Reason 5 and Record 1.5 lets you use multiple MIDI keyboards, pads, and controllers for playing and recording your instruments. Lock a 16-pad controller to a Kong, and use a keyboard to play your synths. Or use two keyboards on stage for controlling different Reason instruments. Scale Clips by Resizing By pressing the alt or option key, Record 1.5 lets you timestretch individual clips. Now you can stretch loops to match your song's tempo, or expand samples to eight times the length for completely new sounds. Mute Tool The new Mute tool lets you click to mute and unmute clips. Use it to mute sections, or create variations in your Blocks. Set and move loop functions Select a clip and press L to immediately set the loop points to the selection. Use the new Remote parameters for real-time control of the loop points from your MIDI controller. Tap Tempo New in the transport panel is the Tap Tempo button. Improved key commands for laptop use Reason 5 and Record 1.5 works even better on your laptop – or any keyboard missing a numeric pad. The new key commands lets you control play, loop, record and more from your keyboard. Hierarchical menus in Combinator programmer A sound designer favorite, the Combinator's programmer window is now even easier to use with hierarchical menus for fast patching. Additional CV inputs on Combinator The Combinator in Reason 5 is expanded with new CV inputs on the back. The four new CV inputs can be used to control any parameter on the contained devices, providing even more options and possibilities for sound designers. Updated Help system (incl Help on Mac) Reason 5 and Record 1.5 comes with a new and better built-in help system, on both Mac and Windows. Bounce clip to sample When using Reason & Record, you can now bounce audio recordings to samples, so you can use them in Reason devices such as Kong, Redrum, NN-XT and NN-19. Reason 5 updates In Reason 5 there are tons of changes to bring Reason up to speed with Record. These changes include advanced multi core support, improved cable management in the rack, faster sample loading, on-screen piano keyboard, sequencer usability improvements and much much more.

Upgrading from Reason 4 to Reason 5 with Record 1.5, I can honestly say that this is finally a complete DAW unlike its predecessor.

It's extremely light on CPU and upgrading my computer for Reason was totally unnecessary. It's never crashed on me, and so forgetting to save your music only becomes a problem when the electric meter reaches 0. Lack of VST support may defer a few people but if you know what you're doing then you'll manage without. If you're ever unsure about how to develop a particular sound, there's a bunch of very good tutorials from both Propellerhead and other users on YouTube such as LuckyDateVideos.

    You wont regret this purchase.

Best Recording and Composition Software Ever 9 May 2011
By The Information - Published on Amazon.com
After having used Ableton, Cubase, Dr. T's KCS, Logic, Creator/Notator, Vegas, Fruity Loops, Cool Edit Pro, and ProTools, I tried out Reason (v3 & v4). At first I didn't like them, or even understand them. Then I had the pleasure to try the Reason/Record Duo version 5 bundle, after I already had some experience and became comfortable with Reason. At that moment my life changed. I saw the entire history of my experience with music software pass before my eyes. Even more a light went on inside my head, and a hopeful message: may the computer never ruin your musical idea again.

In a sense I wish I had never seen any other software. It tainted my brain. I wish I had Reason/Record ten years ago. I am trying to erase the horrendous memory of configuration problems and VST plug-ins from my head entirely as I delve further into this highly functional music creation tool.

With Reason and Record everything just works. You can get into funny routing but the truth is you never even need to "flip" the rack if you don't want to. Non-technical musician types will jump for joy at the pure effectiveness of this recording tool. Once you are up and running you might never launch Reason by itself again. All I ever do at this point is launch Record, which essentially has the full-blown Reason inside, beating like a heart.

Comparing this solution to others is almost impossible as the user-interface for recording audio tracks combined with the built-in instruments makes this product unlike anything I have ever used. Sadly, I lump almost everything else I've tried into a category I can only refer to as "pain-in-the-butt software". At the end of the day, for a musician, these products are all about what you get done, how you get it done, and IF you get it done. Other products I've tried have been so problematic I dare say many of them completely prevent creativity. I've had musical ideas that completely disappeared after 45 minutes of messing around with plug-in problems and deciphering the basic routing of audio signals. With Reason 5 / Record 1.5 it seems these issues are gone for good!

I always celebrate software tools that excel in quality user-interfaces and ease-of-use for people who are NOT technically inclined. This is why we buy computers. Propellerhead Software has created the killer-audio-app of the century that I can say without hesitation completely warrants the purchase of entire computer system. This is a turn-key solution of epic magnitude, and it strikes me as very odd that every musician I know has heard of Reason but nobody has heard of Record. Thus my desire to write this review. I see people constantly going into studios so the "Pro Tools guy" can make their record. This program doesn't need a separate "guy". All it needs is you.

ONe of the best DAW's for the beginner. . . 5 Oct 2010

Set up is a breeze. Although, I'm a little more advanced than your beginner. I have an M-Audio FastTrack Pro, and I have a several MIDI controllers in the studio. A little complicated, but well worth it.

I've been messing with the demo for a while now, and LOVED the interface. Now with the Reason 5 and Record 1.5, I feel it is now a complete DAW and recording suite. Now I just have to save up for ReCycle, and I'm complete for a home studio for hip-hop. And with Record, I can record acoustic guitars and/or vocals. Comes with a mastering suite, so this can be your all in one (although I prefer ProTools mastering suite).

I'd say try it out from the direct download if you're not sure. You get 30 days to mess around with it. . .

I don't have to say much, but you can probably find videos on youtube or from the Propellerheads website.

    UPDATED
Nevermind. . .I won't need ReCycle any more. . . .It's now all internal!!!! Wish I could add 3 more stars for that!!!!

    Constantly Amazing 10 Jun 2011
By Coddington Horsebodice - Published on Amazon.com
I bought Reason 1.0 back in 2000 after downloading the demo and hitting the tab key. Reason (and Record) is engineered to be like a rack system. When you hit the tab key you see the back of the rack with all the patch cords, and you can rewire everything to your heart's content. When I saw that I was like... "Oh, I have to get this." Since I was used to having an actual rack, the whole thing made a lot of sense to me.

The big problem back in 2000 was the sequencer, which was not exactly what one would call robust. So I used Reason in Rewire mode for 10 years with Performer, which was great because I love Performer's sequencer (thanks Propellerhead for making Rewire so easy). I would run Performer and record all the audio tracks there, using Reason as a sort of auxiliary rack for a lot of sample playback and synths. Along with the VST instruments in Performer it's still a great way to work.

After skipping a couple Reason upgrades I finally decided to upgrade to Reason 5 and included Record 1.5, which is a great deal for any previous Reason owner. All I can say is wow, they finally did it. The sequencer is so much better. I wish it had the functionality of the Performer sequencer with its transpose and split notes features (for instance), but it's a very very easy sequencer to use making things like automation data a breeze.

The other great thing about the improved sequencer is the use of Blocks. I am used to using Chunks in Performer so it was a no-brainer for me, but the Propellerhead Blocks have a feature where you can very quickly mute specific tracks within the Blocks and actually override the Block content with variations for lead-ins and bridges. This is way easier than what I'm used to doing in Performer.

This is a great software product. I agree with the other reviewer here that it is one of the best software products you will ever own. It seems to be crashproof. I just can't seem to break it. I tend to try rather unorthodox patches between instruments and samples in order to create new sounds, but it never seems to complain.

If you are thinking of getting into music on the computer, don't bother with any other product. Reason and Record will make your life so much easier. This is a product that will serve you well for many many years.
