5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining investigation of the Tudor state, 11 Oct 2004
Although its title infers a limited locus of investigation, Propaganda and the Tudor State actually cuts to the heart of the precise nature of the Tudor State and the limits of its authority. By its close investigation of the specific examples of Devon and Cornwall, it sheds light on the general questions of the relationship between centre and periphery and the evolution of the organs of the state. Indeed, although it's a relatively slim volume, it comes closer to offering a convincing interpretation of Tudor statehood than much weightier monographs. And thanks to a lively prose style, it's a book that should appeal to both the general reader and the student: in particular, the useful and lucid summary of the prevailing historiography should alleviate even the most calamitous essay crisis.
