Of almost 200 reviews of 'Gone with the Wind' on amazon I could only see one that even pointed out the obvious problem with this classic film - it is underpinned by racist assumptions and provides a (to my mind) utterly revisionist view of the Civil War that could have been the work of the Confederate propaganda bureau - and the Ku Klux Klan inheritors of 'the cause'.

Imagine a film made in Germany today depicting the 'civilization' of Germany before WW2, anti-Jewish laws and all, as a golden age of 'Knights and their maidens fair' - Jews are denied the vote - or any other basic human rights - but they are happy with their lot and just engage in banter with their masters. Then the war breaks out and the Allies are presented as the bad guys - particularly when they invade Germany they are demonised - and the Jews help the German army to dig trenches and say things like "Don't worry master, we'll stop those Americans" - and on top of all that, the worst rich and powerful who make use of Jewish slave labour, and the Jews themselves, refer to poor Germans as "trash"

Unthinkable that such a film would be made about 70 years after the defeat of Germany in 1945 - but that's 'Gone With the Wind' in a nutshell - exonerating the Confederacy even though 'the cause' they were fighting for was the retention of slavery - the 'right' to buy and sell other human beings alongside hogs, mules and wagons etc.
