4.0 out of 5 stars One of Milan's funniest :) 7 Jun 2012
By Lily
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I laughed like an idiot out loud at the first half of this book, it got a bit serious after that but 'Proof of Seduction' definitely has some of Milan's best humour. I liked Jenny, our main character, she was resourceful, mature and was pretty quick witted against Gareth. Gareth was every inch an Marquess, and although not my favourite male lead of Milan's he is hysterical to read about. I especially liked his first 'friendly' conversation with White, his sort of secretary. Overall the first half was lighthearted, funny and the second half got a little serious and a bit soppy. The book lacks the exciting plot found in 'Unraveled' and even '...governess,' which makes me wonder if this is an earlier book than the others. Although that's my opinion so you'll just have to read to find out, this is still a decent read :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Proof by Seduction 2 April 2013

Beautifully written novel, with well-developed characters. Through the many twists and turns of the plot, I found myself laughing out-loud and caring about what happened to the characters, particularly Jenny and Ned. I couldn't put it down until I had finished it and then felt bereft that there was no more to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent one of the best 15 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Cannot believe this was courtneys debut novel !! Thoroughly surprised by the beautiful tale she has woven ... You have got to read this you will not be dissppointed... I love that the hero has problems expressing himself and in doing so stumbles over words and makes matters worse often insulting people in the process.. Refreshing to read about a lord not so sure of himself and i love how jenny makes jim see the error of his ways... And it helps the chemistry is tangible between them .

4.0 out of 5 stars The Charlatan and the Scientist 19 Mar 2010
By Book Gannet TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Jenny Keeble is a charlatan! And she's spent 12 long years working hard at it. So when Gareth Carhart, Marquess of Blakely demands scientific proof of her powers, Jenny is furious. Not only is the arrogant Marquess threatening her livelihood, but he plans to ruin her tentative friendship with his impressionable cousin, Ned.

But what starts out as a scientific experiment soon changes, as Jenny and Gareth strike sparks off each other with each meeting. After all, who can keep science on the brain when seduction is in the air?

Milan's debut is an impressive start, with fascinating characters, unusual developments and plenty of often surprising humour. A strong and determined woman, Jenny is a great lead, who knows the realities of her world and how to cope with them. In contrast Gareth is a bit of a wrecking ball, throwing his weight about in a scientific and coolly rational way, without realising that life, and especially emotions, is rarely so straightforward. His journey in this story is excellently played out alongside the budding romance.

However, sweet, earnest and demon-ridden Ned thoroughly stole the show for me (making me want to kill Gareth at times), and I loved his brotherly relationship with Jenny. I can't wait for his story.

Elephants and oranges, fortunes and failings, this tale takes the reader on a marvellous journey that's by turns amusing, romantic, touching and a little heartbreaking. With a start this good, I expect wonderful things for this author.

Format:Mass Market Paperback
Mischievously sweet, Proof by Seduction charms as much as it endears the reader to its very unconventional main characters. Courtney Milan's writing takes historical romance to a new level with its unpretentious overtones and tweaks the historical romance mold in an appealing way. The moral to Milan's story is that truth will preside, and that honest infatuation, attraction and yes love, will win all.

In many historical romances you have rampant posturing: the depiction of a Regency era rake, a powerful family, the focus on society, the haute ton and its ilk. Regency romances are rife with illustrious personages posturing over one another-the sheer heft and weight of the peerage can strong-arm a romance and bind it to its whim.

But Milan's tale is a clearly an 18th century romance, not a Regency, an altogether different kettle of fish and quite refreshing. The distinction being that her story takes place in 1838 after the Regency has gasped its last breath and society is barely living on the remnants of its fumes. The solid glue in Milan's tale is that of truth, honesty, the most basic calling cards of love and its the focus is on its diverse characters Jenny Keeble and Gareth Carhart, not the ton.

One gets the impression that Gareth Carhart, Lord Blakely is a real man, not a cleverly cast construct. His intense academic and naturalistic nature brings to mind William Adamson of Byatt's Angels and Insects meshed with nine generations of Blakely DNA to call his own. His personality leaps from the pages, as does his healthy desire for a dishonest woman: enter Madame Esmerelda.

Jenny Keeble is a likeable character despite her occupation of bilking others (albeit gently) out of their pocket change for a fortune told.
