One of many movies that I'd seen in the cinema - and I've got it in my collection, this film is (loosely) based on the article "Adventures in the Ransom Trade" and story "A Long Walk to Freedom".

The story of an British Army soldier/negotiator, Terence Thorne (Russell Crowe - who would've made a good 007), who assists in securing the release of businessman Peter Bowman (David Morse), by enlisting the help of his Green Beret buddy, Dino (David Caruso).

Alice Bowman (Meg Ryan) is at her wits end on how to get her Peter released, another trump card comes in the form of a Foreign Legion prisoner, Erich Kessler (Gottfried John), who manages to escape the camp where Peter is held hostage.

A successful plan of action is mounted to release Peter and another hostage when Thorne, Dino and a small band of troops destroy the camp - Peter and Alice are reunited, with Thorne, Dino and co, all go their ways once the Bowmans head home.

Proof of Life is an excellent movie that explores the relationships between various characters : Thorne, as a father and an employee, as with Alice as a wife and sister in law and many others too - those who aren't fussed about having this film in a DVD collection, then order it : I bought it elsewhere, and with some bonus material (very good), this is an ideal one to have!.

The world of kidnap and ransom is exposed in this mixed effort. The opening montage showing a rescue and extraction amongst the war torn fields of Chechnya is set to a voiceover from Crowe and is the highpoint of the movie until the action gets going in the final reel. Crowe plays Terry Thorn, a specialist in hostage negotiation who falls in love with the wife of the kidnapped engineer he's trying to free. I can see why this would look good on paper; it's full of inner conflict and longing, sadly though, the love story bit doesn't work well at all with Meg Ryan's character coming off really badly; test audiences hated it and it the movie was chopped up a bit to tone it down. With the love story almost gone, this doesn't leave us with much, thankfully the dependable David Morse is brilliant as the kidnap victim, taken far off into the hills. David Caruso lends a hand as a co-contractor who helps Crowe during the military phase of the rescue - this bit is hugely thrilling but isn't enough to turn it into an action picture, the rescue team look great as they take out the rebel camp holding the hostages - at least the military advisors knew what they were doing!

Saw this film on a flight home from USA and thoroughly enjoyed it, Crowe is a negotiator and ends up working for nothing to help release a hostage who is married to meg ryan. They strike up a close relationship as time ticks by in securing the release of her husband and meeting the kidnappers ransom demands is difficult due to lack of funds so Crowe enlists some help and goes in to the jungle to take matters into his own hands.

All ready knowing what its all about, reading the other review, this is my little bit that I have to say..
If you like movies that are totally focussed and don't wonder of all over the place... Then this is a one to order.....you could look over with a magnifying glass, and nit pick about this or that, but why do ... just enjoy and get carried away by a really good film... after all 90 percent of movies are total rubbish anyway......Very rarely a nice little film comes along ...... Also for me, make a note to watch out for the kitchen scene ( Soap producers watch this and see how it really should be done ). If you clap when the scene ends, then you are one with me... Thank you...

Russell Crowe is totally believable as a Kidnap and Ransom Special Operative. His relationship with client Meg Ryan is full of longing looks but could have used the sex scene that I am aware was deleted as a result of news stories of a similar relationship of the stars behind the scenes. It's a shame they eliminated it because the whole movie is a bit repetitive and frustrating with all this obvious mutual attraction, resulting in one last minute kiss. I think you might have had a hit if there was less coyness (if that is a word). It was a bit of a monitary flop and I personally think it would have been far better if the couple really responded to each other.

Proof of life is a fantastic film. From start to finish it kept me on the edge of my seat. Proof of life is not high in action but what you do get is a well made film with an extremely good story and very good actors. However the action sequences you do witness are superb. Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe are superb together. If you enjoyed the negotiator you'll love this ! Ten out of Ten !

This film, based on truth, shows the harrowing ordeal of kidnapping. All the actors played their parts well, and the psychological realm of the film was portrayed with sincerity. The special features, how the film was made, the director's commentary, etc., was very good.

This was a film that I already had in my collection, I hadn't watched it for a while so I decided to do so. Unfortunately I got 3/4 of the way through and the disc was sadly corrupted. I ordered another copy from Amazon because it's such a great film, and it arrived within a couple of days. Great service, terrific movie!
