Biography

Helen Folasade Adu was born in Ibadan, Nigeria. Her father was Nigerian, a university teacher of economics; her mother Anne was an English nurse. The couple met in London while he was studying at the LSE and moved to Nigeria shortly after getting married. When their daughter was born, nobody locally was prepared to call her by her English name, and a shortened version of Folasade stuck. Then, ... Read more in Amazon's Sade Store

I first listened to this on a personal stereo in the dark of an overnight coach trip to France in 1988 at aged 15 or so..best way to describe this album is that I can remember exactly the first time I listened to it.. romantic, heart tugging, easy listening, dinner music, background music, dance with your partner in the front room music... the album fits a hundred different moods.
Is It A Crime says how most of us MUST have felt at some stage in our lives - there is a touch of melancholy behind what I find a very positive and uplifting album. Sweetest Taboo (remix Shola Ama a couple of years ago)and Never Good As The First Time (this strikes a chord for all) are the other heavyweight tracks with Tar Baby, Fear and another couple drifting you into a peaceful state of mind.. and You're Not The Man applies to both men and women in and out of relationships..
First date or 25th Anniversary - you can't beat this album for rekindling a bit of romance - you only need to sway from side to side to enjoy it.
Try this one before more modern Love Deluxe.

Released in November 1985, `Promise' was the second album from UK jazz-rock band Sade (pronounced Shar-day), led by the "famously reclusive" singer/composer Helen Folasade Adu.

The band's music has a timeless quality, difficult to date. Pop, blues and ambient jazz all feed into the mix, dominated by Sade's powerful contralto to make for a distinctive concoction mellow, stylish, classy, immediately recognisable, with a commanding emotional restraint beneath which simmers deep emotional experience.

The standard of this band is so consistently high that several contenders line-up for the `best Sade album award', but `Promise' is certainly a front-runner. The powerful opener `Is it a crime?' (`that I still love you, and want you to love me too') has great musical dynamics with bold full-on tenor sax alternating with Sade's subdued but arresting vocal delivery. `The Sweetest Taboo' is a delightful hit-single song with a fine chorus line; `You're not the Man' a song about the realization she is with the wrong guy, written from insight, maturity & intelligence and delivered with a delicate poignancy.

The whole album is a sublime, rich and enjoyable listening experience with first class production values.

This is music for grown-ups; the real deal. It continues to inspire, it never ages, and sounds even better now than on its 1985 release - the sure indication of a true classic.

There was always something missing in my collection but not any more. What can I say, just amazing. Just the first lines of the first track make me pause for a moment and enjoy her music and her voice; and then I want to do only one thing... volume up and play the rest. Amazing CD. Amazing Sade!

Blue is the color of this second Sade album. Her music has always been an eclectic mix of light jazz and blues, and in her follow up to the more jazz oriented "Diamond Life" she colored this one with the blues. There are still some fast and rhythmic tunes (The Sweetest Taboo, Maureen) but this one is slower and more thoughtful. From "Mr. Wrong" and "Tar Baby" to "War of the Hearts" we are taken on a journey into the heart, always treacherous as Sade shows.

Her spicy and rain filled "The Sweetest Taboo" and the fast moving anthem to our youth and friends lost, "Maureen" (a song which still gets a lot of jazz airplay), are placed in just the right sequence to balance out the downbeat "Jezebel" and the absolutely haunting "Fear," a meditative song of a girl in fear for the life of her young Matador, waiting anxiously to see if this will be the night he does not return.
This one is like a hypnotic trance and a 'must have' in your Sade catalog. It is truly origional and great, a perfect companion to "Diamond Life." Go back and pick up this magnificent work of art. It sounds better than ever and like all Sade's music, is timeless....

This album is so good it almost defies belief!
Most modern female singers ought to be forced to listen to Sade's music, which, like this album, oozes class from every pore.
The band are on fine form, and Ms Udu's voice is breathtakingly soulful and emotional on this remarkable album.

Beautiful and well worth the money. Can't get better on the high street. Don't worry about whether there is any quality, just buy it.

Not her best album but this still stands the test of time given that it was that 'difficult second album' when it came out. You're not the Man and Never as Good as the First Time are stand out tracks that compare with anything in her impressive discography.
