Product Description

Product Description

Covering what is needed in a one-year or even one-semester introductory Prolog course, this book assumes access to any suitable Prolog or PD Prolog interpreter, such as LPA Prolog. It aims to introduce students to Prolog in a straightforward way and where AI topics are included, they are the easier ones and are treated simply. In addition to paper examples and exercises, each chapter includes practical exercises to be tackled on the computer, for which examples are given in the lecturer's supplement. It is expected to be used on computing degree courses and HND/C Computing.

As it says on the cover, it is well suited for 1st or 2nd year students. Not so hot for third year students - it just doesn't go deep enough. But for starting out, this helps you get to grips with the basics of Prolog very quickly, though maybe a bit too basic. The exercises are helpful and thankfully the test questions have answers, unlike many other books. It helped me get through a module in my second year. Recommended, but you'll need to add to this if you want to go further.

good for beginners 6 Dec 1998

Positive: didactically absolutely brilliant - many concepts that the usual student of Prolog needs to learn by doing are explicitly laid down. The examples are very easy to understand. The cut is introduced not earlier than in chapter 18 of 22 and I really did not miss it.

Negative: Not all examples work as printed. Bibliography could need some annotation and is incomplete. Some topics are left out, especially difference lists.

You'll read the book once and with pleasure. For a course it is absolutely fantastic but you don't want to have it on your desk for everyday's work. It got 4 crowns only since I found it incomplete and the errors in the examples tempted me to give it even less.

I bought this book when I was learning prolog. I found it quite useful, and enjoyed reading. It may not provide everything for advanced users, but it is a good book for beginers. Most of the text is brief and clear. So I would recommend it to those who are new to Prolog.
