I love Prokofiev's concert arrangements of music from Alexander Nevsky and Lieutenant Kije, but no such treatment of Ivan exists by the composer. Others have made commendable efforts to compile one. I used to own Muti's thrilling account with the Philharmonia, but the narrator and poor documentation bothered me. I was also unconvinced by Jarvi's CD with the same orchestra, with its demented speeds and aggressive recording. Now, this recording by Polyansky strikes me as the most generous presentation of Prokofiev's music.
Here, it is the complete score, punctuated with liturgical hymns to more fully elucidate the historical context of Ivan's reign of terror. Polyansky has always been best admired for his work with singers and this recording is, as you might expect, most idiomatically sung by its Russian forces; but combine the sounds of Polyansky's grand and imposing interpretation with the trademark Chandos engineering and you have the ingredients for a world beater. Prokofiev's orchestration is a triumph, kaleidoscopic in its colour, invention and emotional candour. A few images in the booklet from the movie/s might have been nice. You do get texts and translations though.
Strongly recommended.
