This is a typical Naxos release, a very reasonable performance at a really low price. However, Prokofiev's 5th has received many fine recordings over the years (including one conducted by the violinist David Oistrakh), and this isn't quite in the same league. The fill-up is the rare '1941' Suite, a rousing propaganda piece, but quite heart-felt, I feel. A stronger version used to be available on the German Beaux label (for further details of this & other rare Prokofiev discs e-mail me on email@example.com). This is a good version for the cash-strapped first-time buyer, perhaps.
