There's a clear shortage of recordings of Prokofiev's symphonies even today, at least those of other than the 5th. If one have a Prokofiev symphony in a concert evening it's almost sure it is just the 5th. So, here we have it again. I was sitting in August 2011 in the new Music Centre of Helsinki listening that take of the 5th while being in a bit frustrated mood about the choice of the symphony. Not because the performance itself. Oramo's and Rso's impressionist or even a bit romantic interpretation sounded very fresh and untypical (in relation to usual heavy seriousness adopted by many conductors during recent decades). The frustration was rather a small disappointment after the fact that almost a year before the concert of the 5th Oramo had conducted the 6th with Rso in Finlandia house. And what a performance it was! Now one can have a taste of it in this cd. It is faster than the ones of Järvi and Gergiev, which really pays back: the symphony is rhythmically and expressively so rich that one wonders whether it is from the composer of the 5th. Listening to it one begins to hope to have the 3th, 4th or 7th as well. Well, we got the 5th. Hope we'll have more from Oramo&Rso. In the meantime we listen to the reference 6th and the fresh 5th.
