Faster and more defined than even the classic, Pollini (relentless, polished) in the last movement of the Seventh.
Sharper, more powerful fingers and more bounce. A definitive version of Sonata 7 and the one I play first and last.
Same applies to the last movement of the Eighth where Glemser is less spiritual but just as involved as Richter. This very great sonata - the best after Liszt (following Beethoven, and barring the super-concentrated and virtuosic sonatas of Scriabin) deserves a clean perfomance and Glemser is alert to every tune and note.
All notes are played precisely and resonantly, all themes delineated clearly; recorded sound is far better than both Pollini and Richter in aforementioned DG issues.
Buy it! This is a steal. This is better than the competition for all.
Possibly Pletnev with identical sonata pick? (2, 7, 8) - haven't heard but much respect for the maestro - however can't think that it will be significantly better than this very fine set from Glemser.
Also buy the second disc with this perfomer - 1,3,4 and Romeo and Juliet, this has even better sound and equally strong and sensitive performances, if slightly less mature and amazing music from Prokofiev.
Bernd Glemser gets sod all press, yet has won over a dozen international competitions and is as outstanding a pianist of his generation as Kissin, Berezovsky, and Pogorelich.
Going back to Scriabin - you simply must buy the first Scriabin disc from Glemser as well! Sonatas 2 (beautiful), 5 (exciting), 6 (creepy), 7 (way out there) and 9 (evil) in gorgeous recordings and with brilliant performances.
You can pick up all Prokofiev and all Scriabin sonatas, from this artist, for less than the price of a meal out.
