Many years ago I bought a double cassette of Prokofiev`s "Romeo & Juliet complete ballet suite", Little did I know at the time that this was the recording that all others would be judged by, It was the version by The Bolshoi ballet theatre orchestra conducted by Algis Zuraitis.
But as the old cassettes are now just about worn out, I wanted a replacement on CD, but the Zuraitis version is now only availlable as a single disk "Highlights" version.
So after being disappointed with another version that I had bought I gave this Andre Previn recording a try.
Upon playing it for the first time, what a revelation, it compares extremely well with the Zuraitis version, in fact it is an awesome recording in its own right.
The arrangements have been kept as close as possible to the original and several times I forgot that I was actually listening to a different recording.
As for the Cinderella complete ballet suite, I am not as familiar with this piece so had nothing to compare it with, but it sounds just as good and as well orchestrated as the Romeo & Juliet piece and I will certainly be listening to it more often to become more familiar with it.
It comes attractively packaged in a Boxed set of four disks, and not in one of those fiddly multi-disk jewel cases.
If you are looking for excellent top quality recordings of these ballet suites I can recommend these without hesitation, You will not be disappointed.
In fact I have nothing negative to say about this set whatsoever.
