simply - this is a great introduction to Sergei Prokofiev's exhilerating and profound piano works at a bargin price on naxos.

Bernd Glemser plays with real technical mastery + passion and has a real grip of the dynamics but also subtleties of this great piano music that includes the solo piano transciption of Prokofiev's marvellous Romeo + Juliet score. a more than worthy cd to compete with Berman on chandos or Richter on DG + for less than £5. buy this is yr a fan of angular, sardonic yet searching piano music with one foot in the classical pantheon, yet one foot in the coded, bitter,ironic soviet era .

i particularly love Prokofiev's searching Sonatas played by Glemser on volumes 1 + 2 (personal favourites are his Sonata No.2, 3, 4 + 7). therefore Piano Works Vol.1 release is also strongly recommended.

This was the first of the naxos Prokofiev piano sonatas discs that I got, and I liked it instantly. People may have said that the early sonatas are too derivative, but they are still great fun. No.1 is very good, as is no. 3, and the last movment of no.4 is amazing. The Romeo and Juliet peices are good, but not as brilliant as the sonatas. The playing is great, as is the price.

I must have listened to the whole recording five times throughout the first day. The Sonatas are beautiful. The ten pieces from Romeo and Juliet are magical!
