Clean, crisp, brilliant!,

This review is from: Prokofiev - Piano Sonatas (Audio CD)
Faster and more defined than even the classic, Pollini (relentless, polished) in the last movement of the Seventh.
Sharper, more powerful fingers and more bounce. A definitive version of Sonata 7 and the one I play first and last. Same applies to the last movement of the Eighth where Glemser is less spiritual but just as involved as Richter. This very great sonata - the best after Liszt (following Beethoven, and barring the super-concentrated and virtuosic sonatas of Scriabin) deserves a clean perfomance and Glemser is alert to every tune and note. All notes are played precisely and resonantly, all themes delineated clearly; recorded sound is far better than both Pollini and Richter in aforementioned DG issues. Buy it! This is a steal. This is better than the competition for all. Possibly Pletnev with identical sonata pick? (2, 7, 8) - haven't heard but much respect for the maestro - however can't think that it will be significantly better than this very fine set from Glemser. Also buy the second disc with this perfomer - 1,3,4 and Romeo and Juliet, this has even better sound and equally strong and sensitive performances, if slightly less mature and amazing music from Prokofiev. Bernd Glemser gets sod all press, yet has won over a dozen international competitions and is as outstanding a pianist of his generation as Kissin, Berezovsky, and Pogorelich. Going back to Scriabin - you simply must buy the first Scriabin disc from Glemser as well! Sonatas 2 (beautiful), 5 (exciting), 6 (creepy), 7 (way out there) and 9 (evil) in gorgeous recordings and with brilliant performances. You can pick up all Prokofiev and all Scriabin sonatas, from this artist, for less than the price of a meal out. Do it

Top Prokofiev at a Bargain Price,
By Mr. A. R. Boyes "Alan Boyes" (Newcastle, England) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Prokofiev - Piano Sonatas (Audio CD)
I've little to add to the other excellent reviews of this recording. I've yet to hear the rest of the cycle, if it is part of a complete cycle of the sonatas, but Glemser's playing and the naxos sound engineering take some beating.
I've always found the eighth sonata a bit of a tough nut to crack - just a little too expansive after the driven and dynamic seventh but it will have had few better performances than this. Both the second and seventh similarly get fine performances. The second isn't one of the better known sonatas, coming early in Prokofiev's carrier but already has the familiar mix of rhythmic incisiveness combined with a gift for lyrical melody. The seventh sounds the most modern with its chromatic harmonies and rhythmic drive but it is possibly the most popular and, even in Stalin's Russia, it received prizes and recognition. Surprising given the restrictive approach to the arts and music in particular. Glemser has had to adapt his style of playing to the different demands of the three sonatas. The seventh and eight are so remarkably different given that they were being composed simultaneously. Glemser captures all three perfectly. Highly recommended.

For the curious listener,

This review is from: Prokofiev - Piano Sonatas (Audio CD)
The very capable pianist Glemser's recording of Prokofiev's 2nd, 7th, and 8th sonatas is a typically satisfying release from the consistantly rewarding classical label: Naxos.Glemser seems to understand Prokofiev's attitude very well, and brings along a suitably idosyncratic performance to present these great and especially challenging pieces. At once stiff and then loose playing throughout is usually what I hear from Glemser's Prokofiev. The performance of the 7th is terrific. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the most consitantly brilliant performances of the 7th on disc, with the final movement that rocks as hard as anything from the past century. The same goes for the 2nd sonata. I'll even goes as far to call it possibly the best, most engaging version ever recorded. Glemser seems to have a ball playing the final movement; one which I never grow tired of. The performance of the 8th is where some listeners seem to be extra-critical( particularly the first movement). It's a very tough sonata, and many people are seemingly secure in the knowledge that there will never be another version above the Sviatoslav Richter version. Anyhoo... 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful:

A great introduction to a sonata cycle to rival Beethoven's,
By andrew morris - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Prokofiev - Piano Sonatas (Audio CD)
As with the piano concertos, the 9 piano sonatas by Prokofiev have, with a few exceptions, have been unfairly neglected. The 3 on this disc are brilliant, the 7th and 8th being a bit better, and understandably more famous than the 2nd. The playing here is great, this performane of the 7th is, in opinion, better than Polini's 'great' recording on DG.

Prokofiev on top,
By Stefan Steinsson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Prokofiev - Piano Sonatas (Audio CD)
A genius at the piano, Prokofiev wrote incredible sonatas. Naxos have published all but 5 and 6, together with the Romeo and Juliet pieces. These are on two CD's, played by Bernd Glemser. I am in the habit of buying names which are not world renowned and Naxos have often helped a lot. I must say that Bernd Glemser has beautifully caught Prokofievs spirit. Hats off to Naxos, who have so often provided material of such a high standard for a reasonable price. To the readers, and Prokofiev admirers: Do not hesitate.
