4.0 out of 5 stars Great for children 7 Jun 2009
I bought this product with my Reception class in mind and played it as part of their PE lesson. They loved trying to move like the different animals! I would consider Carnival of the Animals and essential for anyone wanting to introduce young children to classical music.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than "Carnival" 6 May 2010
By postupano - Published on Amazon.com
Amazon's misleading listing and absence of the cover art might cause potential purchasers to miss one of the great recordings of "Peter and the Wolf" contained on this disc, Stokowski's 1941 traversal with the All American Orchestra. I learned the piece from the original 78 album, which featured an extraordinarily evocative cover illustration and am delighted to find it reissued on CD. The narrator is the famed Hollywood actor Basil Rathbone, whose patrician delivery is a real pleasure.

Like the Stoki/Rathbone "Peter," the program features pieces which would help foster children's interest in classical music: "Carnival of the Animals" is from Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra, recording dates given as 1939/1941. Bizet's "Jeux d'Enfants" has Antal Dorati leading the London Philharmonic in 1937 and Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" features Malcolm Sargent and the London Philharmonic in 1946.
5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Peter and the Wolf. 1 Dec 2012

It is a travesty that neither the cover art nor the Amazon listing mentions that Basil Rathbone narrates and Stowkowski conducts Peter and the Wolf.

It has never been done better, and perhaps not even as well. These were two of the world's greatest speakers and conductors at the top of their game.

The horns alone make the recording worth having.
