Product Description

Peter and the Wolf, Prokofievs musical fairy tale, has been delighting children since 1936. Nearly 60 years later, in 1995, the young choreographer Matthew Hart created a witty choreographed version for the Royal Ballet School with designs by Ian Spurling. Described as an utterly delightful ballet and a perfect showcase for the younger students, by the Royal Ballets Director, Monica Mason, it was staged again and recorded for this DVD in 2010.

Format: Blu-ray
This recording made at the end of 2011 finally brings this popular ballet production from as long ago as 1995 to our screens. The intention was to include as many children as possible in the production and thus to incorporate the widest possible range of ages from the ballet school as possible. This was an immediate success and continues to be so.

There is an interesting short bonus film in which Matthew Hart, the choreographer, explains his intentions and these are copiously illustrated using extracts from the rehearsal sessions. During this film there are short interviews with a number of the children portraying the key characters as well as comments from Sergei Polunin as the wolf and Will Kemp, who takes on the combined role of the grandfather and narrator.

Large numbers of children are also involved by using them to take on parts of the scenery such as the meadow, the trees, the wall and the pond. This is a most imaginative use of the cast and is most effective and William Hart pays tribute to the contributing influences behind his ideas such as those derived from George Balanchine and Kenneth MacMillan.

The production is clearly filmed with crisp detail and good rendition of the many colours to be found throughout the production in the imaginative costumes. The sound is presented in excellent DTS 5.1 as well as in stereo.

In addition to the short bonus referred to above, there is also the usual cast gallery typical of this label.

The packed audience, full of mesmerised children, is fully appreciative of the occasion and is a good indication of the likely success of this recording. The limited playing time is reflected in the slightly reduced price range.

I bought this because the children were studying the work at school. What you get is a pin-sharp HD recording of a live ballet performance. The dance I know nothing about, but it looks highly competent and we all enjoyed it. The music is beautifully played but recorded quite distantly. On even a reasonable sound system, this adds a nice, realistic bloom to the acoustic. The necessarily mediocre sound from small speakers in a flat-screen TV do it no justice, and it comes out sounding a bit muddled and confused.

I like this recording and would recommend it, but for five stars I'd like the option of seeing the orchestra, particularly in this work where the narrator so carefully introduces the instruments; I'm sure this is partly the reason the school's music teacher chose this piece. Blu-ray is a technologically sophisticated medium, and it would be great if we could choose to see the instrumentalists at work. I'd actually prefer that to the seemingly obligatory "bonus feature" about making the recording, which I really can't be bothered to watch.

I bought this for my granddaughter who loves ballet and gymnastics. She was entranced from the very beginning. After she had seen it once she dragged her mother (who didn't know the work) to watch it with her. Before I gave it to her I had a sneak preview, just to make sure it would be something she would like. I thoroughly enjoyed it and now I'm looking forward to seeing it again with her.

The young cast make excellent animals and birds, especially the cat. The narration is excellent, the set simple and of course the music is so clear in its depiction of the animals the whole colourful presentation is a delight.
