No can't agree with the other review (see other amazon listing) yes its a useful "greatest hits" intro compilation for novices wishing to explore the Russian master but this recording from 1989 will NOT serve the memory of the sardonic, angular and above stirring composer. this is Prokofiev for goodness sakes - we need drama, rhythmic bite, glorious sweeping melodies, + irony! although the playing has much finess + the woodwinds in particular come across clearly - none of the defining qualities of Prokofiev are here on this tame naxos cd.
Conductor - Mogrelia + the Czech-SLovak Phil play the works like it was a sunday afternoon tea dance. Not how Sergei Sergeivich intended at all. i love the Russian composers because of their bitter humour + at times fercious rhythmic writing - this is not evident here at all..
go instead for Previn (EMI), Jaarvi (Chandos) or Kuchar more recent recording on naxos or the DG compilation sampler dbl cd Composer series.
