Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto, a flighty and elusive creation, has been recorded countless times, and many classic discs are out there to choose from. My personal favourite is probably Martha Argerich on DG Originals - a truly wonderful reading. Why then consider this CD?

Well, these recordings are unflashy but detailed in their performances, and have, I think, considerable emotionality without being over cooked. The recordings, from the early 90s, are not staggeringly good in terms of sound engineering but are crisp and clear enough to enjoy. I bought this CD because it pairs up with the superb Paik/Wit disc of the 2nd and 5th Concertos - and at well under a fiver, you don't have much to lose in adding this to your collection. The 1st and 4th concertos are relatively rarely recorded too.

Recommended for the above reasons, especially with the CD of 2&5 to accompany it.
