Oleg Marshev's keybord prowess can be compared with the Russian Titans like Richter, Horowitz, Gilels, Berman and Gavrilov. All five volumes of his Prokofiev piano music recordings are technically staggering, artistically outstanding, and extremely exciting. Sheer intensity of his playing, displayed in Sonatas, is just overwhelming. Each volume contains, alongside Sonatas, less known gems and unique solo piano masterpieces played with the same dazzling and uncompromising pianism, which reminds me Sviatoslav Richter, for his intellectual grasp of structure and his daring, risk-taking approach. Undoubtedly finest modern recordings of complete piano music of Prokofiev. A must-buy for anyone after serious art of piano playing!
Hightlight of volume one is the powerful and incendescent performance 7th Sonata. I haven't come across more exciting performance of the sonata since Richter's Soviet era recording in the 50s. 6th is also very impressive if not as intensely charged as Richter's accounts. Visison fugitives and Dumka display Marshev's maturity as an artist and his wide range of tonal gradation.
