Of all my DVDs this is one I keep going back to. This owes much to Prokofief's superb musical score, but in terms of ballet it is a most enjoyable production, intimate rather than lavish, with the lovely and appealing Gabriella Komleva in the title role as Zolushka, or Cinderella, and the fine dancer Murad Daoukaev as her young prince. L.Galinskaya and M. Koul contribute fine dancing and humour as the sisters, who are presented as pretty and sexy, but rather jealous and spiteful, teenagers.

This performance, dating to 1985, is based on the first production of the ballet, in 1944 in the West Siberian city of Molotov (now once again called Perm) where the Kirov company had relocated under wartime conditions. The great Galina Ulanova then danced the title role.

A ballet in three acts based on the well-known tale that has remained a pantomime favourite through the years. An early European version of the story was published in 1697 by the French author Charles Perrault and the German Brothers Grimm, but the put-upon maid-of-all-work who is forced to work as a servant for her family is found in classical antiquity.

Here, to a beautiful score by Sergei Prokofiev composed during World War II from 1940 to 1944, Cinderella is danced by Gabriella Komleva. At the premiere, Galina Ulanova was in the title role. The libretto was written by Nikolai Volkov and the choreography was created by Rotislav Zakharov. The costumes are lovely, and the `ugly sisters' are very far from ugly! Buttons, the wicked step-mother, and all the other familiar characters are here in a recording engineered most effectively from the Bolshoi stage version.

A big success chez nous who are not at all knowledgable on the finer points, just watch for pleasure. My husband liked the ugly sisters as 'saucy' sisters probably a bit better than the good Cinderella. We are looking forward to seeing it again. Perhaps one would have liked a separation of scenes, we arrived a bit quickly at the palace for the ball, didnt miss lack of audience or applause, it was an unexpected pleasure and the music of Prokofiev is always superb.
