Biography

Dexy's Midnight Runners are best known in America as one of new wave's ultimate one-hit wonders, thanks to their 1982 number-one smash "Come on Eileen," a distinctive fusion of '80s pop, Celtic folk, and blue-eyed soul. In the U.K., however, they earned a fair amount of critical acclaim, and made a greater impression on the public consciousness with their frequent changes in sound, wardrobe, and… Read more in Amazon's Dexy's Midnight Runners Store

Product Description

Album Description

The Projected Passion Revue captures virtually everything Dexys Midnight Runners recorded in 1981. Comprising of three single A and B sides, a BBC Radio 1 Session and a BBC In Concert recording, The Projected Passion Revue finds the group at the peak of their game artistically. The line up Kevin Rowland built around him had to display 100% commitment; as he says in his introduction "Something happened and the sound of this group became spiritual, much more than the previous line-up." To take this group to the people, Rowland devised a show which would only play in theatres, where Dexys would be supported by a dance troupe and comedians. The shows found the group transcending the boundaries of live performance and delivering memorably intense sets.

Aside from their three 45s, the group was never properly captured on vinyl. This CD, with its artwork based on the Projected Passion Revue programme is a fitting tribute to one of the most singular bands of all time. As Rowland adds, "what we were doing at this point was peculiar to us and nobody else and we meant every word."

The Projected Passion Revue will be complemented by a 25 Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Too Rye Ay in July 2007. Kevin Rowland and Dexys Midnight Runners are currently working on their first record of new material since 1985.

Back in 1980 when I was a kid, I first saw Dexys on 'Top Of The Pops' performing 'Geno' with their big brass sound and their donkey jackets and woolly hats. Two years later I saw Dexys on 'Top Of The Pops' again. This time performing 'Come On Eileen', but with violins and banjo's and a Gypsy Chic image, and I remember thinking at the time, how radically Dexys had changed in the space of just under two years. Well this is Dexys mark 2 live in concert circa 1981 and it is here you realise how they emerged from 1980 Dexys mk1 to 1982's mk3 in terms of sound, for example: 'Let's Make This Precious', 'Liars A To E' and 'Until I Believe In My Soul', which would make their way on to 'Too Rye Ay' the following year.

For a live BBC concert recording from 81 the clarity of sound is amazing. Well done on the digital remastering, whoever is responsible. The set list and the performances here are awesome. These live recordings are a treasure. This cd is a real gem. Well that's the earnest stuff over with.

Kevin Rowland is on a soulful and spiritual journey here. He wants to welcome in a new soul vision while searching for the young soul rebels, plus he wants to burn it down, break down the walls of heartache, make things pure and precious and punish his body until he believes in his soul. He's going to need a cup of tea and a lie down after this.

Nineteen songs for £7.50 by what the ultra-self critical Kevin Rowland describes as the best incarnation of what, to all sensible people, is the greatest ever British (and Irish) soul band. Do you still need convincing? If so, then "The Projected Passion Revue" is an excellent compilation, blessed with well researched and full liner notes which not even the nasal tones of Gary Crowley on the beginning of the live concert itself can spoil.

For those not familiar with Dexys' music, this is a good introduction showcasing a great live band and specifically some of the choicest cuts from the first two albums.

For most Dexys' afficionados, the principal interest is in comparing the five songs (two of which appear twice) on this release which appeared in different form, with the benefit of strings and backing singers, on the magnificent "Too-Rye-Aye" album. The almost musical-hall knees up of "Show Me" is barely recognisable from the much more contemplative but spiteful "I'll Show You" from "Too-Rye-Aye" which later version I much prefer. In all the other instances, however, the rawer "Projected Passion Revue" verions give the "Too-Rye-Aye" incarnations a run for their money.

"Let's Make This Precious" is more urgent and cleaner-sounding although I yearned for the handclaps when Rowland sets out his manifesto "Give me a record" etc. The two versions of "Plan B" differ from one another and the "Too-Rye-Aye" version. The first has the brass and organ to the fore with Rowland's voice at its majestic best. The second version has the 1 minute 40 second accapella of "Soon" before exploding into "Plan B" itself. The track concludes with a great almost dub-like feel worthy of the Specials.

"Until I believe in my Soul" features a more militant brass introduction than the intimate, plaintive recorder of "Too-Rye-Aye" and the saxophone is similarly more energetic. Finally, the absence of the female vocals and fiddles is felt on both versions of "Liars A to E" which begin with an accapella refrain which feels oddly out of place with the rest of the track.

I cannot think that any fan will not consider these tracks at least worthy of a listen although I foresee many an discussion as to which version one prefers! Practically all the remaining tracks are also well worth a listen making this a very good bargain. More please and thank you.

Lost soul genius 16 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
What an album this is. I have been revisiting the days of my adolescence by listening to the Dexys stuff for about the last six months. I love Searching for the Young Soul Rebels. For my mind Dexys recordings were overshadowed by the (deserved) success of Come on Eileen. They have recorded other music that simply kicks Eileen in the b*lls.

This brilliant collection of songs gave me butterflies in my stomach upon hearing them for the first time yesterday. 'Tell Me When My Light Turns Green' crackles with so much energy I was almost expecting to hear thunder at the end of it. The studio version was exceptionally good, but this upstages it by some margin. Proof if ever it were needed that Kevin Rowland is a genius.

I'm praying that Mr Rowland gets his skates on with the new Dexys album as these recordings are showing that in these days of vacant songs with no meaning, truth or soul, we need him now more than ever.
