Nineteen songs for £7.50 by what the ultra-self critical Kevin Rowland describes as the best incarnation of what, to all sensible people, is the greatest ever British (and Irish) soul band. Do you still need convincing? If so, then "The Projected Passion Revue" is an excellent compilation, blessed with well researched and full liner notes which not even the nasal tones of Gary Crowley on the beginning of the live concert itself can spoil.
For those not familiar with Dexys' music, this is a good introduction showcasing a great live band and specifically some of the choicest cuts from the first two albums.
For most Dexys' afficionados, the principal interest is in comparing the five songs (two of which appear twice) on this release which appeared in different form, with the benefit of strings and backing singers, on the magnificent "Too-Rye-Aye" album. The almost musical-hall knees up of "Show Me" is barely recognisable from the much more contemplative but spiteful "I'll Show You" from "Too-Rye-Aye" which later version I much prefer. In all the other instances, however, the rawer "Projected Passion Revue" verions give the "Too-Rye-Aye" incarnations a run for their money.
"Let's Make This Precious" is more urgent and cleaner-sounding although I yearned for the handclaps when Rowland sets out his manifesto "Give me a record" etc. The two versions of "Plan B" differ from one another and the "Too-Rye-Aye" version. The first has the brass and organ to the fore with Rowland's voice at its majestic best. The second version has the 1 minute 40 second accapella of "Soon" before exploding into "Plan B" itself. The track concludes with a great almost dub-like feel worthy of the Specials.
"Until I believe in my Soul" features a more militant brass introduction than the intimate, plaintive recorder of "Too-Rye-Aye" and the saxophone is similarly more energetic. Finally, the absence of the female vocals and fiddles is felt on both versions of "Liars A to E" which begin with an accapella refrain which feels oddly out of place with the rest of the track.
I cannot think that any fan will not consider these tracks at least worthy of a listen although I foresee many an discussion as to which version one prefers! Practically all the remaining tracks are also well worth a listen making this a very good bargain. More please and thank you.
