Book Description

You’ve been given a project to run. You know you need to get it right, but you don’t know what you need to do and in what order to make sure it all runs smoothly and you come out of it looking great. You need Project Management Step by Step.

Almost every manager and businessperson finds at some time that he or she has to complete a task that has sufficient complexity and importance that an ad-hoc approach to getting it done is just not enough. Managers in this common situation need the structure and rigour of a project management approach, yet very few managers are formally trained in project management or have the inclination, time or finances to become trained. They need an approach they can feel confidant is sufficiently robust to ensure their success, but also simple enough to be immediately applicable. Project Management Step by Step provides the solution to this problem; a practical and immediate way to become a competent project manager.

This is a comprehensive and authoritative guide written and structured in a practical and rapidly applicable style.

Product Description

From the Author

This is very much an introductory guide to project management. It was written for someone who has a project to run, but is not quite sure how to go about it.

I wrote it to be straightforward and practical - but it really works! The sort of person I had in mind when writing it was either a professional manager who has lots of experience, but has not been responsible for a project before - or someone delivering a project in their private life, such as renovating a house, who wants a process to help them get through the work. It is, as the title implies, a step-by-step guide, walking you through the whole lifecycle of a project. It will also be interesting to anyone who wants to train people in a simple but effective project management approach. It is probably less relevant to professional project managers, unless you are at the very start of your career.

From the Back Cover

The proven, practical guide to running a successful project, every time

“This straightforward and insightful approach gives results. It provides enough structure to ensure visibility and reliable delivery without smothering you with paperwork. It's no nonsense real change for the real world.” Matthew Dearden, CEO, BT Directories

You’ve got an important project to run. You need to know what to do, in what order, to make sure it all runs smoothly. You want to come out of it with the desired result, and looking good. This book is for you.

Project Management Step by Step is the proven, practical guide to running a highly successful project, one step at a time. It breaks down the management of the project into easy stages that will ensure you cover everything, at the right time, to bring about a successful delivery.

Refreshingly jargon-free, it’s a book for anybody who doesn’t need in-depth theory and principles of various project management techniques, but rather just wants a foolproof guide to making sure their project runs smoothly, on time and to budget. It offers an approach robust enough to ensure your success, but simple enough to be immediately applicable.

This is the fast track guide to becoming a competent and polished project manager.

“A great approach, simple to understand, yet powerful in application. It delivers the project results!”  Dave Keighley, Managing Director Operations and Logistics, Virgin Media

5.0 out of 5 stars As a Reference or Learning Aid, invaluable 4 April 2013
This book is a concise easy to read guide to the essentials of Project Management. Richard's writing style is very personable. My girlfriend did an advanced diploma in Project Management a few years ago. I read all handouts/information provided my the college, including the recommended book which took around four pages to make one point. Myself and my girlfriend are agreed that all the principles of project management are covered here in a succinct and accessible manner. A book does not have to 500 long and jargon laden to be good.

Personally I found the book really helpful, I have completed a few projects without any formal training and subsequently read this book and it reaffirms all my beliefs. Now if I am working on a project and if I doubt myself in any moment I reference the book in my mind to ensure I am taking the right approach.

Project Management in its essence, is simple, for some people it comes naturally and can see things very clearly and others they need more formal training, whichever one you are you need to read the book, it has all you need as a quick reference or to help you understand Project Management, in a step by step approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive 30 Mar. 2010
A copy of this book was given to me when I started the implementation of a large project and I am very grateful for it - hence this review. I have rarely seen a book explain things so practically and I could imagine it being tremendously useful in a very wide range of situations. My opinion? Well worth it.

It's descriptive, but really sticks to the step by step approach and therefore fails to convey project management in real life. I read it as my first book about project management and it gave me a good basis to then build up on with further reading (possibly about project management but from different angles).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great advice, easy to follow 8 Jan. 2014
By Lue
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I thought this book was great. It's just the right amount of detail for anyone to pick up and has some great ideas in it. I found the flow of some of the material in the third section a little choppy, but not so much that it was confusing.

I think my only criticism was that the author only really used tables as planning tools - there are lots of other kinds of planning tools to use so it might have been nice to touch on some of those.
