Bob Hughes, Roger Ireland, Brian West, Norman Smith and David I.Shepherd have produced an interesting account of IS Project Management. The book refers to the ISEB Foundation IS Project Management certificate which I passed using this book. It could well refer to individuals who simply wish to understand the basics in IS project management.
There are eight chapters to read namely:
1) Projects and project work (project management and development lifecycle)
2) Project planning (product flow diagram, activity planning, resource allocation)
3) Monitoring and control (monitoring progress, purpose and types of of reporting, corrective action)
4) Change control and configuration control (roles and responsibilities)
5) Quality (Quality control vs Quality assurance, dynamic testing, ISO 9001:2000)
6) Estimating (various approaches are explained)
7) Risk (risk assessment, risk management, risk monitoring)
8) Project organization (programmes and projects, identifying stakeholders, project support office, matrix management, team building and dynamics, management styles)
Throughout the chapters there are a number of illustrations which depict the essence of best practices stated. There is a plan to the learning material explained which shows that there is a connection between all chapters.
I would highly recommend this book to every IT professional interested in IS project management.
