Amongst many project management books this one shines out like a beacon for its simple, well-structured presentation of the fundamentals of Project Management. It is particularly useful for those just turning to Project Management and contains some very useful practical exercises and self-assessments. It is a good hand/work-book for those getting involved in projects for the first time - or taking on their first project management or supervisory role.

And, it all links with a Video Arts video on the subject.

The lay-out is excellent, clear concise headings, good illustrations, charts, diagrams. There are also some really good CheckLists at key points throughout the book. Mercifully low in all but essential jargon - and with a nice Glossary (albeit part-way through the book!) it aids the learning process, helps build knowledge, makes initial understanding of the subject easy to develop.

The Design of the book is excellent - attractive cover, front and back flaps and a durable "hard-soft-back" cover that users will find useful as they use this as a workbook/support tool through their involvement in projects and project management.

The author seems competent and confident in his delivery style and key learning points are re-inforced throughout a thoroughly excellently presented 96 pages.

RELATES TO THE NEW EDITION (FEB 2009).

In as much as you can distill the basics of something as vast as project management into 72 pages this is an excellent start. It is not, however, anywhere near definitive in that much of what is left out is the discipline of project management. If you are completely new to it, running a small scale project or are looking for somewhere to start then I would heartily recommend it - but not alone. There are a number of online resources that can certainly flesh out the wisdom contained here and books too. Only three stars because of its scope (see the section on scope for further details!).
