Product Description

Project Gotham Racing 4 is the highly anticipated next instalment of the blockbuster Project Gotham Racing (PGR) franchise, developed by Bizarre Creations exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. With a dramatic new weather system, revamped career mode, revised Kudos system, new tracks and locations as well as the worlds most iconic vehicles, PGR 4 takes racing to a new level of thrill and excitement.

For the first time in PGR history, drivers will have the option of racing a variety of motorcycles from top manufacturers, such as Ducati, BMW and Honda. Whether on two wheels or four, players must perform daring and stylistic moves to win over their fans, who will cheer them on as they follow their road to racing notoriety.

In addition, through a new content server, drivers can save their favourite races and search over Xbox LIVE® for race content that is specific to their interests. Players can find out who has the longest slide or wheelie in Shanghai or St. Petersburg, for example, through the innovative new content server.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic!, 10 Feb 2008
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Having thoroughly enjoyed both PGR2 and PGR3, I was eager to get my copy of the newest installment. And I do not regret it one bit. This game has become one of my all-time favourite games in such a short space of time.

Firstly, the positives, and where to start. The graphics on the game are spectacular. One of the things that has always drawn me to the PGR series is the graphics and the amazing street environments you race through. The cities are so accurately depicted and you can tell how much work they have put into them. All of the cities from PGR3 have returned as well as some awesome new ones such as Macau, Quebec and Shanghai and others (the Nurburgring is here as always).
The weather effects are a very good point as well, having improved on the physics from previous games. The rain and ice effects feel so realistic. The location of puddles at certain corners really forces you to rethink your driving line. The driving physics in this game are as good as ever. You have a real sensation of speed when driving down narrow streets.
They have altered the car lineup from PGR3 to give a broader range of car performances rather than purely focusing on supercars. This is good because it brings it closer to the days of PGR2 where you start off in the small slow cars and work your way up. It's a nice compromise between the 2nd and 3rd game. The range of cars is great though. They still include so many unknown but great manufacturers (check out the MTT turbine superbike - powered by a helicopter jet engine!!), but for some reason they don't include Porsches, but only a company that tunes and re-engineers porsches (RUF) The american cars still oversteer like crazy, racking up some nice kudos, whilst the hyper cars are still as lightning fast as ever.
Unlike what other reviewers have said, I find the single player mode to be very lengthy. It takes a few seasons to get to rank 1 and once you're done with that the arcade mode will keep you occupied for a long time as well as xbox live. The introduction of the PGR shop was a good idea, it lets you use your kudos to buy different car packs, new tracks, new helmets, or even an achievement!
The geometry wars game found in the garage is different to the xbox live arcade game. It's called Geometry Wars: Waves and is a fun and addictive twist to the series. It can't be played anywhere else apart from PGR4.
Achievements are nicely balanced in the game, most of them being for single player, but requiring you to put some time and effort into the game.
Of course the big addition to the game is the appearance of motorbikes. They are phenomenal. They take some practice and getting used to but they are quite realistic, and you have to adjust your handling style from the cars. They allow you to perform some cool stunts for kudos with the B button and left analog stick (for wheelies and endos). Before each tournament you must make your decision for a car or a bike carefully. If it is a city like new york with giant straights in it, then choosing a bike will get you slaughtered because of its poor top speed. On the other hand a twisty track will require a motorbike.
On the sound front, the soundtrack is what you would expect from PGR games up to now, except there is probably a greater variety this time around (from indy, to hip hop, to classical). For some reason I seem to find Mozart incredibly fitting for races :D. But you can obviously listen to your hard drive music. The engine sounds are great and unique but are quite overpowering on the default setting.

Now for the negatives. Whilst the ice settings are very realistic, they make winning near-impossible and you HAVE to race in it on a certain championship in single player. As for the snow settings they don't seem realistic enough as they are relatively easy to race on compared to ice.
I have found the frame rate to stutter sometimes in rainy races where all the cars are kicking up spray. Whether this is a fault with my machine or the game I don't know, but it is certainly present. Despite the huge range of cars, you will probably never use most of them because there is a better alternative in the same class that you can use.

Overall then, this is definitely a must have game if you are a racer fan, or indeed any gamer, and it is a more enjoyable alternative to simulation games like Forza. This game will keep you entertained for a long time to come. If you're on the fence about this game I hope this review has persuaded you to go for it. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!, 25 Nov 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
As a huge fan of the original incarnation of Project Gotham (Metropolis Street Racer on the old Sega Dreamcast), I found the first Project Gotham on the Xbox a huge step up in difficulty, and a huge step down in fun. About halfway through the game, no matter how hard i tried, I just couldn't seem to be able to get any further! Probably my lack of skill as a gamer. As such, I was a bit weary about getting Project Gotham 4 for the 360. Needless to say, Those doubts were blow away within minutes of playing it.

The introduction of bikes add a whole new dymanic to the game. They're great! Many times I've taken outside lines around corners on a bike, to leave a Ferrari F40 for dust inside me, or weaved in and out of slower moving cars to zoom from the back of the field to the front. As someone with a keen interest in learning to ride bikes, it gives me the great opportunity to try out some of the best bikes in the world in a realatively realistic simulator.

The introduction of bikes also gives you the chance of completing every challenge in the arcade mode in both a car and a bike, and to see which one you're better with, and if there really is that much of a gap between cars and bikes.

While I've never had the chance to drive any of the cars in the game, especially not the powerful RWD class A cars, the driving seems relatively realistic. The difference in handling between each car is quite apparent, and their personality really shines through, making the game great for multiplayer. Picking something like the MacLaren F1 to race against say a CBR600 isn't automatically a win for the F1! It takes time and effort to learn to drive and ride each of the vehicles.

On the whole, I really like this game. Its tough at times, but theres no pressure to feel you have to achieve Platinum in every challenge. Ocassionally, it can be very frustrating, but even that can be solved by changing the difficulty or just using a different car or bike. The frustration diminishes the fun slightly, so only 4 stars there, but overall a great game and worth the investment if you like racing simulators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, 15 Oct 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
The type of games that I play are FPS like Rainbow Six, Halo 3 and Gears of War etc and I'm normally not into driving games but bought this on a whim and I'm completely hooked on it. I love it. You earn Kudos points really quickly enabling you to buy new cars, tracks etc. There's lots of different game modes to play on. Once I've become a bit better then i'm gonna try it on Xbox Live (add me to your friends list "mikebashbauer") Overall its a great game and would recommend it to anyone who likes the driving genre or those have not tried it before like me.
