Product Description

This biography tells of the failures and comebacks of a ghetto kid whose academic talent opens doors onto a world of private schools, rich classmates and plum jobs but who, back home, confronts a neighbourhood of growing poverty, drug abuse and crime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Project Girl is beautifully and brutally raw, 5 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Project Girl (Hardcover)
Project girl does not promise that the reader will totally "relate".It tells a story,a true story with unflinching honesty that many are afraid to tell, and are afraid to hear.It is raw. I am also a "project girl " from NYC,in her late thirties, studying for a Masters Degree.Though I have not lived in the projects for 15 years ,the good and the bad of that experience are a big part of me that I cannot deny. This is a beautful comming of age story.Keep your head up,sister!

3.0 out of 5 stars Project Girl is worth reading but it left me with questions., 25 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Project Girl (Hardcover)
I just finished reading Project Girl. This book was very inspiring to me as a single mother, battling circumstances of poverty as well as my final year of law school. However, I believe that Ms. McDonald failed to consider one point. That is, the professional workforce includes a substantial number of African-American, first-generation, college graduates, with less impressive educational credentials and family support than what Ms. McDonald enjoyed. This demonstrates that "arriving," at least for African-Americans, does not depend exclusively on educational background but also, perseverance, know-how, and ambition. Yet, throughout her book, Ms. McDonald explained that she lacked these qualities. On Ms. McDonald's resume are a felony criminal conviction (based on her own confession), hospitalization in a mental institution, consistent poor college grades, a profound lack of interest in the law, and disdain for the legal profession. Thus, I can only guess that Ms. McDonald's educational and professional accomplishments are due to pure luck as there is no way that an individual, no matter their race, gender or economic status, having these experiences can become a New York corporate attorney in a high profile law firm as Ms. McDonald apparently did.

5.0 out of 5 stars inspiring, funny, heartbreaking, 27 July 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Project Girl (Hardcover)
Janet McDonald's witty, often heartbreaking account of her journey from the projects of Brooklyn to Paris, France is a must read. For young women struggling against odds stacked up against them, it will be an inspiration. For older women who have fought to get where they are, it is an important reminder never to give up. But her story is not just for women. In sharing her personal history, McDonald's book ultimately becomes an important social commentary from which anyone can glean lessons: about self, about family, and about the society in which we live today.
