Product Description

“A high-tech launch site, a missing nuke, and Arab terrorists with nothing to lose . . .”

In the sun-dappled waters of the Aegean, ex-agent Michael Vance pilots the Odyssey II, a handmade replica of the sailcraft of the ancient hero Ulysses. Out of nowhere, a Russian Hind gunship with Arab terrorists at the helm fires upon the tiny ship below. The terrorists’ destination is a tiny Aegean island where a U.S. aerospace corporation carefully guards the Cyclops 20-megawatt laser launch facility. But the company security force is no match for the firepower of the Arab invasion and the launch site is quickly overrun. With helpless horror, the executives can only watch as renegade technicians convert the launch vehicle into a ballistic missile that can deliver their stolen thermonuclear warhead to any city in the U.S.

Left for dead amid the smoking ruins of Odyssey II, Michael Vance washes up on the occupied island – and becomes America’s only hope.

Great idea 13 Aug 2011

I am not a great reviewer, however I have read a number of Thomas Hoover books and I must say I like them all, lots of action lots of twists and good story lines. I did like this one as it brings lots of different sectors into play, fantasy as in the project, FBI, secret agents and private agents, terrorists and Government all to save the world. Great book well worth a read.

Firstly, I have to say that I love reading spy thrillers and for me Thomas Hoover is up there with the best.
Project Cyclops starts with a semi-retired ex agent, (Michael Vance) who starts his book sailing a lovingly built replica boat (from designs used by Ulysses) in the Aegean.
The plot starts to unfold almost immediately and centres around a small island near to Crete and a massive new laser launch system named Cyclops, which has taken years to design and build and is just becoming ready for a full test run. The island and system end up being overtaken by international terrorists, keen to use the new launch system to launch stolen nuclear bombs.
Part of the interest for me is not just the excitement and action, but it is also the interaction and 'politics' between not only different countries, but also different governmental departments and describes the negotiations very well, but also shows how delicate they can be, whilst all the time there is a sense of urgency as the clock is ticking.
The plot has lots of turns and twists and although I have not done the plot justice (I appologise in advance)it really is a page turner and the main charcters have a real depth to them, you feel like they are almost 'old friends' where you have read about their exploits in previous books in the series, which for me is not the case, as my first Thomas Hoover book was Life Blood (totally different storyline and characters) and this is the second I have read by him, which incidentally in my opinion is better than the first. I cannot wait to read others written by Thomas Hoover.
The book is very easy to read, but I like the fact that it has to actually be read, there are very few parts which can be skimmed over, which is what I tend to do if a book is too easy or boring.

Move over Andy Mcnab, Le carre, Grisham et al as there is a new kid on the block. My only question is: Why have I not heard of this author before getting my Kindle, as he really should be on the best sellers list!

This is a very good story, very exciting but I'm afraid I have to give up on it. During the past five minutes of reading the book I've been writing down words that are hypenated needlessly (and ridiculously) not at the end of a line, or page, which would be acceptable maybe, but just at random all over each page.

A five minute survey revealed:- Mus-lims, defi-nitely, hap-pened, complet-ing, mis-sions, mas-sive, some-thing, in-cluded, hund-dred, fa-vorite, Vir-ginia, ear-nest, consul-tant.

Sorry, but its interfering with the flow of the story because its so irritating ..... and I give in and give up. Come on proof readers, what are you thinking of? Doesn't anyone check the proof readers? And if not, why not?

Very shoddy work, in fact it takes the prize for the category!
