From the Author

An entirely new approach to mastering Microsoft Project
Tim and I hope you will find our book to be a great tool for mastering the latest version of Microsoft Project. Key benefits include the following:

- The CD-ROM included with our book includes all of the practice files you need to complete the lessons, multimedia demos of many Project and Project Central features, and a fully functional 60-day evaluation version of Project 2000.

- Our book is certified and approved training material that can help you pass the new Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) core and expert level exams for Project 2000.

- It's the only book about Project 2000 available that was written by Microsoft insiders: a technical writer (me, Carl Chatfield) and a product support professional (Tim Johnson) from the Project group at Microsoft. Our combined knowledge of Project and the challenges faced by real-world users has resulted in an excellent novice to intermediate level tutorial.

Microsoft Project 2000 Step by Step focuses on doing real-world project management work with the latest version of the most popular project management program in the world, Microsoft Project. The tutorial is organized around the sound project management principle called the project triangle: define and run your project in terms of time, cost, and scope. The lessons in the tutorial follow the same order in which you manage a project: create and fine-tune a project plan, track progress, and manage variance in actual work.

Written in an approachable, friendly style, our book guides you through the rich and sometimes complex interface of Project. In addition to instructions on working in Project, each lesson contains valuable tips and shortcuts about working smarter, as well as project management principles and best practices.

Good luck with Project!

Carl Chatfield

Microsoft Project is a large and complex product, often used only to a fraction of its capability. This Step by Step guide is a well structured tutorial, covering all the major points, and leaving the user of MS Project well placed to consolidate the knowledge gained.

The many exercises have been carefully prepared, and are well documented. The exercise scenarios, based around the making of films and videos, are straightforward to understand.

The book comes with a 60-day licence for MS Project, so you don't need to pay £400 for the software in order to learn how to use it.

The combination of a well written book, the exercises, and the 60-day licence for Microsoft Project, makes this an absolute bargain.

One caveat - this is not a book to learn about Project Management - it is just about using the MS Project software.

A good reference 2 Nov 2003

This is a good book for someone who has some knowledge of Project. However I did find at points the explainations a bit difficult to follow. I would not recommend this to someone who is trying to learn Project on their own but would definately recommend it to someone who has had some exposure to it.

For starters, note that the book does NOT come with a 60 day evaluation version of project 2000. Microsoft have removed it from the CD in the later versions (bless there little cotton socks). That said, I'm glad that I did not send the book back as it is so much better written and more user friendly than the project 98 version. For starters, you have only one project document to follow through from start to end. Not a different document for every chapter. The writing style is freindly and interesting. It's over a hundred pages longer than the 98 book but you can comfortably read it in a couple of days and you also come away with a real feeling that you understand not just the functionality of the product but how to apply it in real world situations.
If I had known when I bought it tht it did not come with the evaluation software I would not have bought it as I already had the 98 version of the book. Such would have been a mistake as it's miles better than it's predecessor and well worth the investment.
