Bought this for my left-handed wife who's been suffering from items designed for us right-handers in the majority for some time. Though I guess it's technically capable of being used by left handers too, this requires it to be be turned upside down which is not intuitive (acc. to the expert!). I wouldn't therefore describe it as custom-designed for left-handers and you may therefore wish to try out other designs before committing to a purchase of this one...Progressive I-Can Opener, Ratchet

I find this can opener invaluable - I honestly couldn't function in my kitchen without it. I find it impossible to turn those 'cog wheels' on normal can openers (always have, even before manual dexterity/health problems) and can't understand why some of these reviewers are having problems using this opener. You simply hold it together over the edge of the can and squeeze the handles together - always works first time for me. I like the fact that the can lids, when cut, will fit inside the can - much better for recycling. I don't cut all the way round the can top though; I always leave a little attached, it makes it easier to drain off excess fluid from cans, then push it inside once the can is empty.
