If you haven't got a clue what programming against IE is about, read it. If you're looking for in-depth info (and usefull code samples on DHTML and the DOM from JavaScript or VBScript), this is not a good book: even the Visual Studio help-files are better. The chapters about HTA's are outdated, about ASP shallow, and so is the chapter about COM-components. You need other books for that. Code examples on CD are mediocre: the lines of code do something, but why and how ...??

If you want to program with IE5 this book is a good start. It will make you aware of the possibilities available for a project involving IE5. The real problem with this book is that it explain what can be done in great depth but does not have a lot of information on how to use these techniques. This book is a good pointer but it is not the only book someone serious about programming with IE5 would need.

I had the opportunity to work closely with Scott Roberts in Developer Support for Internet Explorer technologies while Internet Explorer 5 was in development. Scott was so expert in the use of the new technologies that they hired him to develop future versions. Scott's advice was essential while I was writing samples for the book. Pick up the MS Press book on XML, and along with "Programming Microsoft Internet Explorer 5," you'll have everything you need to develop mission-critical weblications using this incredible platform!
