The finite element method (FEM) is a computational technique for solving problems which are described by partial differential equations or which can be formulated as functional minimization. The FEM is commonly used in the design and development of products, especially where structural analysis is involved. It's a great textbook for grad students or anyone who wants to learn finite element basics and programming techniques. I guess it would work for smart undergrads too.

Unlike other books I've seen this one covers both mesh generation and visualization of the results. The book has a source code, examples (downloadable online) and detailed explanations with the code so that you can figure out how to edit it for your needs.

Pros: It's much easier to learn by examples than by formulas. The software is usable and works for 2D and 3D elastic and elastic-plastic problems. Java is good for understanding the code.

Cons: Theory is there for heat transfer problems but no code.
