Book Description

If you use Entity Framework in Visual Studio 2008 and .NET 3.5, this is the book you want. Programming Entity Framework, 1st Edition offers experienced developers a thorough introduction to Microsoft's core framework for modeling and interacting with data in .NET applications. This hands-on tour provides a deep understanding of Entity Framework's architecture and APIs, and explains how to use the framework in a variety of applications built with Visual Studio 2008 and .NET 3.5.

From the Entity Data Model (EDM) and Object Services to EntityClient and the Metadata Workspace, this highly acclaimed first edition covers it all.

  • Understand the core concepts you need to make the best use of the Entity Framework (EF) in your applications
  • Learn to query your data, using either LINQ to Entities or Entity SQL
  • Create Windows Forms, WPF, and ASP.NET applications
  • Build ASMX web services and WCF services
  • Use Object Services to work directly with your entity objects
  • Delve into model customization, relationship management, change tracking, data concurrency, and more

One important note: while many of the lessons from this book will continue to be valuable as you move to .NET 4, the thoroughly revised second edition of Programming Entity Framework (August 2010) specifically targets Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 -- where there have been many advancements and additions to the framework.

I've found this to be an excellent book helping you all the way from taking your first steps to pretty advanced topics.
If you have no experience at all with Entity Framework, you'll be glad to know that Julia Lerman doesn't make any assumptions about your prior knowledge. If you already know the basic stuff, just skip a few chapters and dive into the more advanced topics.
Make sure to fire up your Visual Studio and code along with the samples and your on your way to EF stardom.

I'm astonished by two of the other reviews here. One complains that there aren't enough diagrams when my copy has over 400 screenshots and images, and the other complains that the book is about Entity Framework 1 when there is a separate revised edition available for Entity Framework 4. Do the homework - get the right version!

This is a thorough piece of work and far and away the best way to learn Entity Framework. The author has provided a thorough, weighty tome on the subject which covers far more of the subject matter than the similar offering from Apress. There's no "explain the obvious simple stuff and ignore all the complicated stuff" here. If you're interested in Entity Framework this is the book to get.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more summary diagrams 20 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
I was frustrated when I started reading this book by the lack of summary diagrams. It takes until page 219 to show you the first two diagrams, which would have been better placed back in chapter 1, to set the scene. Then there's nothing until page 680, when there are a handful on a particular topic. Julie seems to take the approach of why use a diagram when a thousand words will do..

The text itself is very readable, and gives you useage examples from every angle (LINQ to Entities and Entity SQL, as well as showing how to use these in Win Forms, WPF, ASP.NET, web & WCF services).

One further niggle is every example is given twice, once for VB & once for C#. As a C# developer this just makes the book 20% thicker than it needs to be!

In summary, as a newcomer to Entity Framework I've found the book provides a comprehensive introduction to the technology.
