Book Description

22 Aug 2008 0750689609 978-0750689601
PIC Microcontrollers are present in almost every new electronic application that is released from garage door openers to the iPhone. With the proliferation of this product more and more engineers and engineers-to-be (students) need to understand how to design, develop, and build with them. Martin Bates, best-selling author, has provided a step-by-step guide to programming these microcontrollers (MCUs) with the C programming language. With no previous knowledge of C necessary to read this book, it is the perfect for entry into this world for engineers who have not worked with PICs, new professionals, students, and hobbyists. As MCUs become more complex C is the most popular language due to its ability to process advanced processes and multitasking. RTOSs, that is a need to know for engineers, is also discussed as more advanced MCUs require timing and organization of programming and implementation of multitasking. The book includes lots of source code, circuit schematics, and hardware block diagrams. Microchip's PICDEM Mechatronics board is used to detail the examples throughout the book. This title focuses on the C programming language which is by far the most popular for microcontrollers (MCUs). It features Proteus VSMg the most complete microcontroller simulator on the market, along with CCS PCM C compiler, both are highly compatible with Microchip tools. It includes extensive downloadable content including fully worked examples.

Even though this book was only published two years ago (2008), the software illustrations and walk-throughs are sooo out of date its scary! Here's a nice list for you:-

1. The main focus revolves around the PIC16F877A PIC MCU which is fair enough, this MCU is a very popular model, however the 'free' software mentioned in the book (CCS C Compiler) with which all the examples are shown in does not come with support for this MCU! This means there is no C header file for this MCU and therefore you're either left with trying to scout around the internet for a correct version of this file or alternatively you can manually write the c header file out yourself, bearing in mind that the code is an entire 7 pages loooooong.......and STILL throws up compile errors when your done.

2. The author frequently uses the phrase 'These details shall not be covered in this book, however you can find them in "NAME_OF_BOOK" written by the author'. Because ofcourse, spending £15 on this book didnt warrant all the details you require, just a list of other books you can buy with them in. :-s

3. The companion web site to the book PRINTED ON THE COVER throws up a 404 error because it no longer exists.

4. The MPLAB Development Software illustrated in the book is version 7.52 and the current version is 8.46, which accounts for much of the software walk-throughs making you want to take a long drive off a short pier.

Currently studying an MEng electrical and electronic engineering degree I am quite adept at spotting decent coding however, and the programming section appears to contain some good examples, which is why I have settled on giving the book 2 stars rather than 1.

You won't learn much from this book unless you have prior knowledge of C and PIC assembly language. The subjects introduced are in no particular order, and the author glosses over most of the C syntax. If you want to learn how to program micro-controllers in C it won't happen after reading THIS book.

Just felt the book was weak on coding, i2c routine was skipped over, just not enough meat about the bones really,

More time and effort on coding would be better, if i could get my £20 back i would,

Disappointed, but Mr Wilhurst has a glut of books out. Wont be adding any more to my collection though, sorry,

Very satisfied with this manual, covers many aspects of MCU programming,
working in C is so much more understandable than assembler.

OMG, followed this book closely wanting to learn C after Pic Basic Pro.
Went to purchase CCS C compiler BUT, no way at $600 USD.
Who is in who's pocket with this book.
What a blo*dy rip off
The code is difficult to read on Kindle, I'd recommend you buy a book and by an Author who isn't in bed with CCS C and purchase one where all the smaller examples can be read without the need to squint or use a microscope.
£20 down the drain.
All the authors waffle on for quarter of the book about the basics of Pic MCUs, this and my last book, Pic Basic Pro by Ibrahim pull obscure numbers out of nowhere and don't explain them. i.e. Interrupts INTCON1=7 so what if I don't want all ports digital, how do I adjust for different chips etc etc where did the numbers come from...Timers and so on and so forth. They'll also mention pages on a topic then say it's not in the scope of the book grrrrrr
Kindle for me as source of learning is pretty poor, one can't make some of the small text large enough to read, the book marks aren't fantastic either.
This last author, (can't be bothered to search through kindle to find details, takes too long) tells you to get this and that, doesn't tell you the software is nearly £400, Microchips own software is cheaper then that for the mid range Good if you know NOTHING! And want to know bits.
