Adorned with the kind of icky, low-rent effects and weird fixation with medical procedure that anyone acquainted with the work of director Brian Yuzna (Society) and scriptwriter Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) will no doubt already be familiar with, Progeny is a boon for the connoisseur of straight-to-tape nonsense. Just check out that cast-can't you hear the deep, gravelly voice on the trailer now ("Together at last--Crouse. Brimley. Dourif. Vosloo!")? Obviously, anyone after plausible moments of human drama is in entirely the wrong place and, yes, both the direction and performances are erratic to put it politely (Vosloo appears in a state of near-catatonia throughout), but, in its own, stomach-turning, sub-Rosemary's Baby kind of way, Progeny is a prime example of sci-fi/horror nonsense at its best (and most nonsensical). --Danny Leigh

Dr Craig Barton (Arnold Vosloo) is happily married to Sherry, and is already established as a gifted surgeon, all that is missing from his life are children. He and his wife desperately want a family of their own and have been trying to conceive. The movie opens with the couple making love, before being engulfed in a brilliant light. They both wake up two hours later with no recollection of the events of those missing hours. Sherry later discovers that she is pregnant and the couple are delighted to finally be starting their family but Dr Barton becomes uneasy and through sessions with a physchiatrist who uses regression hypnosis, becomes convinced that Sherry was abducted by aliens and that the baby is not his or even human.
I really enjoyed seeing this movie, it may not be the best of its type but Vosloo is excellent, as is Jillian McWhirter as Sherry. They make the characters at once believable and sympathetic, so that the viewer cares what happens to them. The DVD extras are also worth the cost of the DVD itself, which given its budget price is already excellent value for money. There is the usual chapter search and original theatre trailer, but it is the behind the scenes interviews with the stars which make the DVD a worthwhile purchase. A thoroughly (at times) silly, suspenceful, enjoyable wee movie. Great for an evening in front of the TV with a pizza and some friends. Go on, treat yourself :-)
