Amazon.co.uk Review

OK, brace yourself--this could get messy. Craig Burton (Arnold Vosloo, the eponymous vengeful goon in The Mummy) stars here as a dedicated, overworked hospital doctor whose sterling abilities in the emergency room are sadly unparalleled in the bedroom given that he still can't father a child with his spouse Sherry (Jillian McWhirter). Until, that is, he finds himself undergoing a dizzying--and inordinately lengthy--out-of-body experience in the middle of the night. Subsequently troubled by grotesque paranormal visions, Craig is distressed to discover Sherry is pregnant. Convinced his unborn child is, in fact, the product of his wife's abduction by aliens, he's not a happy man. In his fevered state, he first dispatches Sherry to alarming gynaecologist David Weatherly (Wilford Brimley), before visiting both shrink Susan Lamarche (Lindsay Crouse) and alien abduction expert Bert Clavell (Brad Dourif). And from here on in, it gets really dumb.

Adorned with the kind of icky, low-rent effects and weird fixation with medical procedure that anyone acquainted with the work of director Brian Yuzna (Society) and scriptwriter Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) will no doubt already be familiar with, Progeny is a boon for the connoisseur of straight-to-tape nonsense. Just check out that cast-can't you hear the deep, gravelly voice on the trailer now ("Together at last--Crouse. Brimley. Dourif. Vosloo!")? Obviously, anyone after plausible moments of human drama is in entirely the wrong place and, yes, both the direction and performances are erratic to put it politely (Vosloo appears in a state of near-catatonia throughout), but, in its own, stomach-turning, sub-Rosemary's Baby kind of way, Progeny is a prime example of sci-fi/horror nonsense at its best (and most nonsensical). --Danny Leigh

For fans of The Mummy (arguably THE movie of 1999, easily holding its own against the long awaited Star Wars prequel) this is an excellent opportunity to see the Mummy himself, Arnold Vosloo, in a starring role of a very different kind made in the same year.

Dr Craig Barton (Arnold Vosloo) is happily married to Sherry, and is already established as a gifted surgeon, all that is missing from his life are children. He and his wife desperately want a family of their own and have been trying to conceive. The movie opens with the couple making love, before being engulfed in a brilliant light. They both wake up two hours later with no recollection of the events of those missing hours. Sherry later discovers that she is pregnant and the couple are delighted to finally be starting their family but Dr Barton becomes uneasy and through sessions with a physchiatrist who uses regression hypnosis, becomes convinced that Sherry was abducted by aliens and that the baby is not his or even human.

I really enjoyed seeing this movie, it may not be the best of its type but Vosloo is excellent, as is Jillian McWhirter as Sherry. They make the characters at once believable and sympathetic, so that the viewer cares what happens to them. The DVD extras are also worth the cost of the DVD itself, which given its budget price is already excellent value for money. There is the usual chapter search and original theatre trailer, but it is the behind the scenes interviews with the stars which make the DVD a worthwhile purchase. A thoroughly (at times) silly, suspenceful, enjoyable wee movie. Great for an evening in front of the TV with a pizza and some friends. Go on, treat yourself :-)

This is in some ways a masterpiece of suspense, Arnold Vosloo is brilliant as a surgeon who is abducted by alien entities (not to mention his fantastic american accent) havent met anyone who can master a south african one yet!The film is chilling and really eerie! The special effects are also well above par for a straight to video movie. Overall a very satisfying movie and well worth buying.

When I saw this on Zone Horror, it stuck with me, but still wasn't terribly memorable. Well recently I watched the TV and all I can think is I must have been tired that night because its pretty good!

Basically this is a creepy psychological horror about a doctor who discovers his wife is pregnant despite him being pretty much incapable of impregnating her. It also happens that one night not too long ago two hours passed unexpectedly, and things get worse when a hypnotherapy session results in him remembering an encounter with otherworldly forces. It gets pretty disturbing from that point on.

This movie has believable characters and does a get job of setting the right atmosphere.
