Joe Satriani is the guitar. He has been both artist and teacher, instructing such famous pupils as Steve Vai, Metallica's Kirk Hammett, Counting Crow's David Bryson, and jazz fusionist Charlie Hunter. Quite a complex work with some classic Spanish guitar work translated into electric style, a clear Zappa inspired track or two, some Jazz fusion, the odd bit of retro funk and methinks a touch of Django Reinhardt.
As a result a great many people will hate it because it is not what they immediately recognise as a "Satch" album and it requires listening to properly. The guy has clearly got to a point where he is doing what interests him.
The "I Wanna Rock" track is actually wholly out of place reeks of having been chucked into a much more mature, complex and contemplative work in order to provide something, anything, for many of his fans to hang on to. It is actually the weakest track of the lot but the most commercial.
Overall a very good effort but one that might not have wide appeal.

There is no point comparing Joe Satriani albums because each one has a slightly different flavour.
If all his albums were the same as Flying in a Blue Dream then people would be grumbling that he should be producing something different.
Personally I think this is another cracking album from one of the worlds finest guitartists!

I've been a fan since 'Surfing with the alien ' and his albums are always enjoyable and usually I listen a couple of times on my MP3 player before deleting . This one however is staying on along with 'Surfing' . It may just be me but I really enjoy this one and it gets better each time I listen . A nicely balanced collection .

Think Joe got lost in the corridor with the Professor
The title, is monsterious and to be honest i feel that although Joe playing is not in question, the music is. I feel this is an album of complete loose ends. Read more

lacking in ideas
I enjoyed the first 4 or 5 Satch albums. The last couple though have been woeful affairs. I enjoy listening to a wide spectrum of music and enjoy a lot of jazz style stuff. Read more

Excellent comeback
I like it very much. I love his music. It might not be his greatest ever fingerstyle excersise but it has a lot of his music in it.

Satch has definetely gone off the boil
This album is very poor. It is his weakest album by far and i would include his "red" album and "super collosal" in with this too. Read more
