Readers will find a full author biography under my long-standing name of 'Martin Davies'. I started using my middle name, 'Brett', in 2007 when I wrote 'Doing a Successful Research Project' (Palgrave) - partly because I wanted to distinguish what is a broad-based social science text from my books on social work topics. But I came to realise that 'Martin Brett Davies' had the additional advantage of giving me a unique identity among all the 'Martin Davieses' that are listed by Amazon books. I know that Davies is a common name, but an awful lot of parents, like mine, seem to have thought that Martin fitted it neatly. Sometimes I wish I'd been called John Smith.
