Very Useful 19 May 2012
By Danny
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is very useful it's not full of code or learning such things, however it will help you build a portfolio that attracts clients. I am half way through reading this book and have learnt a great deal.

If you are an owner of a web design company or thinking of starting out then this is fully of handy techniques.

I hope this has helped :)

More like a Smattering than Smashing 15 Feb 2011
By Eliza G. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book has so many issues, I'm not quite sure where to start. The title, "Professional Web Design" leads one to believe this is for professional web designers. But it's far too simplistic for that audience. And yet not quite elementary enough for beginners. Then there's the matter of how chapters are cobbled together by different authors from various articles. It makes for a very uneven read.

Also, don't bother with this book unless you plan on reading it with your computer next to you to visit all the sites that are referenced as explanation of brief introductory notes.(The book is disappointingly almost free of illustrative screen shots.) In fact, don't bother with this book at all if you're looking for in-depth or insightful analysis on any of the topics covered.

In a nutshell, I think the problem with this short book (about 150 pages not including index)is that it tries to be all things to all people and winds up being not much use to anyone. Ironic, since this point is actually briefly covered in the first chapter.

Tip: Just read the Table of Contents from the "Look Inside This Book" link and you'll get all the key points of the book without having to pay for the price of admission. Save your money for a book you'll get more out of.

For the record, this is not a commentary on all Smashing Series books. There are several others I've read that are quite well done. This just isn't one of them.
