5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent SharePoint Administration book (Kindle) 20 Oct. 2013
By Sambro
Format:Kindle Edition
If you want to understand and install SharePoint 2013 then this book is for you. It clearly defines the steps for installing SharePoint (without using the wizard). It starts by getting you to install the bare minimum to get SharePoint up and running and then has a chapter on each service(e.g. User profile Service Application) and other areas such as Branding. It explains what is needed to get it working, giving you an example and building on the example as you work through each chapter. I have used this book to create a demo environment and would use this as a reference book going forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doing my first installation with this book. 12 April 2014
By Dog1
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Performing my first installation and this book is a godsend.
All the sections are logically laid out and the provided commands do the job.
Enough to get your SharePoint farm up and running in good order.
What we really need is an SQL Server 2012 companion guide as that is not covered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent SharePoint Reference! 29 May 2013
By LWB250 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a relative Sharepoint newbie who was given the task of setting up and deploying a sharepoint for our development group, I found this book to be a wonderful resource. I had already installed and deployed using the native wizards from Microsoft, but once I had time to read this book I realized that lathered were many things that MS glosses over in the installation. So much so that I scrapped my initial deployment and did it over 100% so I could utilize the processes presented in this book.

One area that excelled is the section on setting up the search services. This is a critical and very powerful part of SharePoint 2013, and one that the native "wizard" does poorly, in my opinion. After going through the chapter on configuring the search services, I have a very well configured and stable foundation for this important service.

Even though this book is directed more towards the Enterprise version (my organization uses the Standard version) it was still well worth the cost for the information provided.

I would agree that some of the scripts would be far easier to use if they were available online, but this is a minor issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Book 23 May 2013
By Joel Lawler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First and foremost, this was one of the first books out on SharePoint 2013. It straight forward, is easy to follow, well organized and is not padded with useless fluff. There are several nuggets that are helpful that I did not find anywhere else. It is great to have as a reference while building out your SharePoint farm.

The only negative is there is a lot of powershell scripts which is great. It would have been great if they could have been downloaded. There is one chapter of code that can be downloaded. If they added the scripts from the other chapters, it would be very helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on SharePoint 2013 29 April 2013
By Bert Blevins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Excellent book on SharePoint 2013. The book not only provides specific insight in various aspects of SharePoint 2013 administration but continues on the tradition of entertaining while reading. The personality of Todd and Shane resonate through-out the book with little one liners which emphasize key points and keep you engaged to the chapter main points. Well done and thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can I get a Woot Woot? 19 May 2013
By M. Van Cleave - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have been doing SharePoint work since the fall of 2001 and can say that the platform has grown in so many different ways. This is shown everytime Microsoft releases another version of SharePoint. This latest version, SharePoint 2013, absolutely is no exception. When it came to getting up to speed on 2013 as a consultant I found this book. It was written by folks I have seen and interacted with at many SharePoint events and always have been standup individuals. But enough pitter patter about that stuff.

The book. It is excellent. I can say that I don't dread reading it like most technical books. It is very to the point and accurate. I have used much of what they have written already with 5 different clients and it works everytime. They provide excellent guidance and make tough subjects easy to understand. I have already recommended it to many of my colleagues and clients. This is nothing short of the best book I have read on SharePoint 2013 yet, and with that sets the bar very high for others.

If you are thinking of implementing SharePoint 2013, or already have started, you need this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Administrators Manual- limited 10 Oct. 2013
By Csaba Urbaniczky - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Professional SharePoint 2013 Administration is well written and comparatively well-organised. But the organisation is not always how I like it: I don't understand that the chapter 10 and 11 comes after the BI chapter for example. And in many places in the book, I would prefer that SharePoint 2013 is described first separately and comparisons with SharePoint 2010 and 2007 should be in a following section. The present organisation is not clear.

You don't find everything in this book although it is a thick book. There is no chapter about Content Type and the term is not even in the Index; and I who thought that Content Type was one of the most important assets in SharePoint. My intention is to set up a SharePoint installation as an ECM, not as a general web site that seems to be the target audience for this book. There is chapter about integrating Office products with SharePoint although the authors never mention the term ECM (one of my main interests. The book lacks many details, for instance how to configure SharePoint to handle formal documents with different identification series etc. But the authors do discuss Word Document Information Panel and Quick Parts (on one page - the first time I see it in a SharePoint 2013 book). There are many Quick Parts issues you will run into if you are a serious user, none is mentioned in the book. Document property promotion/demotion using Quick Parts is missing from all other books I have read so far.

In the chapter about working with SharePoint Designer there is a long example how to implement a complex approver workflow (another one of my main interests). But neither here, or in the other books I have read about SharePoint, is it described how to lock the columns so that when a document is once approved, the value should not be edited by mistake, similar functionality to the Approve Status for the built in content approval workflow. There is not even a string handling example in the SharePoint Designer chapter.

There is a chapter about OAuth, otherwise the book is very weak on how the governance should be set up on SharePoint; I thought that governance and security were the main tasks for SharePoint administrators. If you are looking for information about SharePoint weakness and how to work around them, you will have to look elsewhere although the authors do mention in one place late in the book that a SQLserver name must be <16 chars. Professional SharePoint 2013 Administration is still a readable book and well worth the cost and it will save you many hours. I haven't found the real good SharePoint book yet.
