Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Targeted at developers interested in leveraging the latest release of Microsoft SQL Server in their applications, Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming is a well-balanced examination of SQL Server 7.0 that meets the needs of readers of all levels. As author Robert Vieira points out, "even developers who have used SQL Server for years have a lot to get to grips with".

This title offers a superb look at SQL Server, but is meant for those utilising the database features of the product rather than those responsible for administration. It does include a chapter on administration; however, its focus is on manipulating data programmatically and through the product's interactive tools.

The author's fine conversational style engages the reader and clearly illustrates procedures. He also handles the version transition from 6.5 to 7.0 well with feature comparisons between the old and new while maintaining focus on the latest release. He includes introductory chapters on the basics of relational databases for developers that are entirely new to SQL.

There isn't a CD included with this book--a trial version of SQL Server would have been nice. However, a companion Web site is available. Whether you want to get up to speed with 7.0's new features or are jumping into SQL Server for the first time, this book is a great place to start. --Stephen W. Plain, Amazon.com

Topics covered: SQL basics, relational databases, T-SQL, table creation/alteration, indexes, views, scripts, stored procedures, cursors, queries, replication, OLAP, English and full-text searches, security, performance tuning, and administration.

Synopsis

With a general understanding of programming principles, SQL Server Programming provides a comprehensive overview of the new areas of SQL Server, for programmers. There is an in-depth discussion of T-SQL, the query language of Microsoft SQL Server. From basic database design concepts a tutorial explains more advanced topics and specific areas including Stored Procedures and Advanced Queries. Advanced topics of performance tuning, security and a solid description of OLAP, which is built in with SQL Server, are then introduced. Data Transformation Services are explained in detail and Remote and Linked SQL Server Agents are covered. With over 1,000 pages this book covers the main topics to provide an in-depth understanding of concepts and procedures, so programmers can get the most out of SQL Server 7.0. Online discussion of the topics in this book available at Wrox's P2P site Whether you're coming from another relational database management system, upgrading your existing system, or perhaps want to add programming skills to your DBA knowledge, you'll find what you need in this book to get to grips with SQL Server 7.0 development. There is no particular programming language, so you'll get as much out of the book if you're programming in C++ as you would in Visual Basic.

Excellent 12 Sep 2000
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book because of the overwhelming recommendation from other readers. This is definitely a worthwhile investment. It has helped me understand normalisation, joins, and all other aspects of sql server and db design. I still haven't read all of it though. Excellent.

Very good, detailed book that covers most topics required to develop, administrate and maintain a SQL Server Db. The only disappointing thing is the lack of depth on more advanced features, such as text fields, DTS automation and OLAP. But generally a much better book than the average SQL book.
