As a major force in the world of affordable, advanced web site deployment, Joomla! has become the most important noncommercial Content Management System (CMS) in the world. The number of Joomla! downloads and add–ons continues to grow at lightning pace, spurring the need for a resource that explores the diverse needs of professional Joomla! developers. Seasoned author Dan Rahmel walks you through the process of creating all three types of Joomla! extensions (modules, components, and plug–ins), explains how best to use Ajax technology, and shows you how to adopt design patterns and incorporate source code control. You′ll examine the underlying technologies (PHP, Apache, etc.) that can be tuned to offer the best system performance, and you′ll explore interfacing with outside content, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) setup, and much more. You′ll even delve into the internal structure of the Joomla! framework, and obtain a unique behind–the–scenes education so that you can modify and extend Joomla! to meet the needs of you and your customers. What you will learn from this book ∗ How each server of a Joomla! system can be installed and configured for maximum performance ∗ The process of creating a module from scratch ∗ Ways to use Ajax to add dynamic data retrieval to Joomla! ∗ Techniques for using design patterns to solve common programming problems ∗ How to create and retain a virtual community ∗ Procedures for tuning a Joomla! site for both Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Management (SEM) Who this book is for This book is for web developers, hobbyists, web designers, bloggers, corporate content creators, and support specialists who are looking to build a more robust web site. 5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on Joomla! I've read yet 18 May 2008
Format:Paperback
This really is a definitive guide to the nitty gritty of Joomla! It isn't a beginners guide (unless you're a beginner to Joomla! with good PHP and MySQL skills), but is does cover pretty much everything you'll ever need to know from installation through to template creation and module, plugin and component creation. Definitely the book to graduate too if you've grown beyond the Beginning Joomla! titles.

My only criticisms are that the book is too short - many chapters leave you wanting more examples or ideas to develop - and that it really only covers Joomla! 1.5, somewhat understandably, and only tips a hat to those still managing 1.0 deployments.

If you want a primer for the programming side of Joomla! or are just looking for more in depth information can't recommend this book highly enough. If you want a beginners guide to Joomla! this probably shouldn't be the first Joomla! book you buy. It should, however, be the second.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good resource but needs more 20 Aug 2008
By jap51
Format:Paperback
I am new to Joomla but have experience in other PHP web frameforks. I anticipated a steep learning curve, but this book is well written for experienced developers and I was up to speed in a few days. Unfortunately I now need to find a much more informative technical manual for the next step in development.

After you get under the hood (first 6 chapters) there is not much left as it tends towards a generic web development manual. It could do with more practical examples on using MVC design pattern & Ajax.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wrox Sucks 4 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
Found the book tiresome to work through mainly because to save Wrox money you're expected to download the code (or type it!). That would be fine if the download actually worked, or that when you try to contact Wrox regarding the problem you could proceed...but even there the drop down doesn't drop and the continue doesn't continue. You'd think a company specialising in technical literature would actually have a web site that worked, take it from me though Wrox doesn't rock it just sucks, big time. Won't be wasting any more of my hard earned on this bunch of internet cowboys, total waste of cash and time, gave one star because it arrived and the other because I don't see it as the authors fault.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional Joomla 16 Oct 2010
By bjude
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
An in depth coverage of Joomla covering issues such as security, SEO and SEM marketing, development of templates and adjusting and writing modules, plugins, extentions and guestbooks. Hagen Graf's Building Websites with Jooomla is a good beginners guide but it's a starter, this is a must, a substantial read and reference work, a little complex for an initial introduction but well worth having to build on existing knowledge and skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Reference Book 19 Aug 2010
By Lochman
Format:Paperback
I haven't finished working my way through the book yet but, so far, it is proving very useful. The documentation produced by the Joomla team is getting better all the time and there is plenty of help and information available on the various Joomla fora so most of the topics covered in the book are already familiar to me. However, the "official" documentation and tips learned from others online tend to be extremely haphazard. I have learned the hard way how to install Joomla and have reached the point of really appreciating all that it does so, in a way, I haven't learned much new. But what is really useful is the organisation that a book like this brings to it all. If I need to look up something, it's much easier with the book than trawling through my own scattered notes. I would also say that there is much greater detail here than in some of the online documentation. Things that I had guessed at are confirmed in the book and other things that I've never had time to "run down" fully are set out neatly for me.

I haven't looked at any other books on Joomla in detail but I like the way that this book is set out, with plenty of examples. (Some of the examples are a bit behind the times because it's a constantly moving target but the approach they illustrate is still valid.) I think this would be a useful book if you're just starting out with Joomla but already have a reasonable level of IT experience and understanding. Sometimes, the best way to learn is the hard way (through trial and error and experience) but using a book like this will give you a head start and perhaps make the whole experience a little easier.

2.0 out of 5 stars Should have trusted my gut... 8 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
I hate to say it but every wrox book I've read has been terrible, and this is no exception! This is far from a book of professional calibre, if you're looking for a book to teach you how to create Joomla! components using the MVC framework in 1.5, this isn't it, it's not comprehensive enough. If you're looking for a fast introduction to Joomla! and you're not really that much into development this is it!
