A disappointment. 9 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I purchased this title expecting it to be a companion volume to the similarly titled "Professional Android 2 Application Development" from the same publisher - Wrox. The Android book was an excellent introduction to the platform written for professional developers. This book fails to match that by some considerable degree.

The book fails from the very start. It consigns an explanation of the development tool package to an Appendix and then jumps into the development of an app using a specific navigation model without explanation of terms or purpose. Quickly moving to the Appendix you discover a set of screen shots from the development tools interspersed with text largely taken from those same screen images - frankly just what you can see on your own Mac. Typos and repetition are apparent in the text for the start and that does not build confidence in the quality of editing - technical or otherwise.

Where are the chapters on location services and accessing the device sensors? Multitasking and the management of inactive processes - key issues for a professional developer - gets a passing mention. A lot is made of simple tab and navigation bars and the duplication of a contact list but the whole mess seems disorganised and fails to address the stated purpose of the book. If you are wondering what the 573 pages do cover then I can tell you that it spends a lot of time demonstrating how to build apps to play MP3 and video files - certainly of some interest to developers that might want to include such resources within an application but the balance is wrong for devices that can already do both of those things rather well.

Straight to the point, for professionals 21 Feb 2011
By Allan Evans - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As a professional who has to find quick solutions on a daily basis, I can say that this book is full of excellent, well-documented examples that I can put to immediate use. The sample code alone is worth the price of admission, and its organized by SDK version, something I have not seen in other books that makes it simple for beginner and seasoned pro alike to use.
A Great Reference for Budding App Developers 27 Sep 2011
By j - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I bought this book, along with many others, to learn to create iOS apps. This was a daunting task since I had little programming experience at the time. As I read book after book and still was not getting very far. I was getting discouraged until I came to this book. The material presented and the code examples are easily understood and implemented. Now I have produced 3 apps and am already working with the new iOS 5. This book is AMAZING!
Very Helpful! 27 Sep 2011

This book was very easy to follow, and is packed with great examples. Designed for the professional, not new programmers.
