5.0 out of 5 stars excellent course of actual learning, 19 Feb 2010
By
I saw the review that had been submitted and couldn't disagree more. This book is not like some of the books that are released on jewellery making now, that are filled with gorgeous pictures and techniques, but lacking real depth and technical know how - how a project is actually fabricated, from start to finish with real attention to detail and cleaness. The projects in this book are not particularly amazing, true, but I think the emphasis is meant to be on refining your skill and technical ability as a goldsmith. Plenty of people can solder and fabricate, but not everyone can do it cleanly, structurally and so that the finished article is utterly crisp and well made. This book is like a course - you start with the easier projects and work towards more challenging projects. There are things like hinge construction and tube setting, as well as bracelet catches for cuffs etc.. All has an emphasis on refinement of SKILL, not design. Once you can create simple things very well you can go for it with design - but if you can't fabricate well then you can sometimes compromise design ideas.
I'd say that when I started this book I was an average mostly self taught metalworker, and this book helped me to start working a full 2 years above my degree level. It helps you to start seeing more logical ways to construct and make and also to be guided very much along that process. I was the sort of person who would choose the most complicated way of making a piece - this book is helping me with this!
Its good - I recommend it, but at the current price, it might be worth checking it out at a library first! I believe it is due to be reprinted with lots of updates.. Its practical and will refine you. Of course, if your already an incredible goldsmith and can fabricate like a pro then no, you won't need this. But its not for beginners..

1.0 out of 5 stars professional Goldsmithing: A Contempory Guide to Traditional, 15 Jan 2006

This is a book that is fine for people just starting out, the techniques are used by professionals but that's where the common ground ends

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and useful book, 3 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Professional Goldsmithing: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Jewellery Techniques (Hardcover)
This book is essentially a programmed course of instruction in jewelry fabrication. It is tightly focused on goldsmithing and nothing else - not casting, not stone setting, not surface treatments, just fabrication. This focus allows a thorough introduction to the field. The book uses a series of projects to develop your skills in an incremental fashion. The projects progress from a simple forged and soldered bracelet to an extremely challenging cluster ring. The project instructions are an artfully crafted combination of explanation, instruction, and full-color photographs. I used this book while taking a one-semester course in metals and it allowed me to work a full year beyond my expected performance level. This is, without a doubt, the most beautiful and effective "how-to" book I have ever seen, and rates about twice as good as the nearest example I have ever read in jewelry fabrication. Bear in mind that the author expects you to have a fairly well equipped jewelry shop available, including a rolling mill (flat, round and square wire rolls) a good torch and a drawbench with a good range of drawplates. I would still recommend going to a school to learn jewelry fabrication rather than trying to go it alone with just this book. Having said that, this is a wonderful book just to look at, even if you never build anything.

Full of tips which would take years to learn in the shop. Well written, good photos, lots of projects. A definite must for anyone working in gold or silver at any level.

What a brilliant piece of literature. Any person who has not used such a book as this is definitely missing out.The instructions and the models are very good, and useable, and will enable any who use this book to attain a very high degree of skill.
